Comments[edit]

Initially I wanted to add every country which had chess category on wikipedia in the list. I got a bit bored and so have posted the article prematurely. About 45/90 countries are done. Please do help out if you can. The FIDE pages needed are listed in the references. Not that the fide website is a bit broken and the way to get the number of GM's and rated players is enterning something like that http://www.fide.com/ratings/avgtoplist.phtml?country=CHN (so with the 3 letter code). Move?[edit]

I think this page should be moved to "List of chess federations and national championships", or something like that. "Chess around the world" is misleading, since it sounds like this page is a discussion of the cultural aspects and popularity of chess, and doesn't reflect the content of this page accurately; it is a list, not an article. What do others think? Toccata quarta (talk) 17:34, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 18:48, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The original edit summary when the page was created suggested that this page was modeled after Association football around the world and could replace FIDE Federations and List of chess national championships. I don't think replacing the championships list is appropriate, but merging the federations lists seems wise. See also the newish article List of chess federations which was redundant to FIDE Federations when it was created and should be merged as well. I agree that "List" should be in the article title. Quale (talk) 19:31, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is some definite redundancy that isn't needed. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 22:12, 31 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The title "List of chess federations and national championships" is too long. It's unwieldy. It's downright retarded. That title would never fly on television, man. I oppose any move until we can agree on a better title to move the article to. Lampenstein (talk) 05:23, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a TV channel. "It's too long" is not a legitimate argument either. Many pages have long titles, such as Comparison of top chess players throughout history. Toccata quarta (talk) 06:49, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"Comparison of top chess players throughout history" flows better than your awkward and jumbled "List of chess federations and national championships." Why the conjunction? While you are throwing "and" in there, why not a few more in the train wreck of a title...such as "List of chess federations, and national championships, and sausage!" Your title sucks, dude. Back to the drawing board on this I say. User:Lampenstein Do some meth! 16:14, 1 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The result of this discussion was to merge. Cobblet (talk) 23:34, 2 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Are there any objections if I redirect List of FIDE Member Federations to this page? The first few parts of that page are out-of-date (e.g. it's completely untrue that non-UN members can't join FIDE – both Palestine and Kosovo are FIDE members) and the List of FIDE Member Federations#Table of Member Federations covers only half the alphabet. The table on this page is not complete either, but it's much further along, and I've added all the entries from the other table to this one and I'll gradually fill it out. Cobblet (talk) 23:32, 25 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've always thought that Geography of chess was an odd article title, but I agree that the current duplication in articles is undesirable. If you are willing to do the work to improve this, I thank you. Quale (talk) 07:54, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it's an odd title. Suggestions for a better one would be welcome. Cobblet (talk) 13:23, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This article used to be called Chess around the world but was renamed in 2014. "(cur | prev) 01:57, 4 April 2014‎ Neelix (talk | contribs)‎ m . . (18,968 bytes) (0)‎ . . (Neelix moved page Chess around the world to Geography of chess: To be consistent with other human geography articles) (undo | thank)". No problem with renaming, but what to do with the supranational level section? Voorlandt (talk) 06:17, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Voorlandt, long time no see :) Given the current scope of the article, how about just List of chess governing bodies? Compare List of contract bridge governing bodies or List of national lacrosse governing bodies. It would also fit with Category:Sports governing bodies by sport.
I don't necessarily mind keeping the current name, except I'd expect an article called "Geography of chess" to link to articles like Chess in Armenia. But I think only five such articles exist for individual countries, and I'm not keen on creating even more redlinks than I currently am with the national championships. Cobblet (talk) 06:43, 28 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
What we really should do is create Chess in the United States, Chess in Germany, Chess in the Soviet Union, etc. That would be work, but they could be a fine addition to the encyclopedia. Quale (talk) 00:56, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
