David Letterman

I think that the clip from David Letterman where they showed real people with funny names should be referrence here. Research?

If Abbott and Costello are an "early example", I think we could use some research. I'd really expect this sort of thing to go back a lot further; hundreds of years at least, probably thousands (though examples would be scarce at best). I mean, it's a pretty basic form of mockery to get some Roman legionaire to walk into an Ostrogoth bar and ask for someone who's name translates as "I am a butthead". Akb4 19:55, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

Colonel Angus

Another gag name is used in a Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Christopher Walken as "Colonel Angus" which is a reference to the act of female oral pleasure, 'cunnilingus'.

Nortius Maximus?

In Monty Python and the Holy Grail, isn't Brian's putative Roman father named "Nortius Maximus", not "Naughtius Maximus"? Meaning, of course, "Big Nose" and fitting in with the other "Big Nose" jokes in the movie.

False Name?

Could 'Gag Name' also refer to when two students, who know there will be a substitute teacher with a seating chart, switch desks before the teacher comes in? Mike Hunt should be merged here

Mike Hunt doesn't warrant its own article, it would make more sense to list it in its own section here. Also, many of the "examples" listed in that article aren't even called Mike Hunt, but Michael Hunt, which is fairly irrelevant as "Michael Hunt" isn't a noteworthy or offensive-sounding name. 172.159.118.187 20:17, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Disagree There is enough material at Mike Hunt for its own page, and somebody truly looking for one of the notable bearers of that name should not have to wade through Dick Hertz and Heywood Jablome to find him. The original proposer of the merge points out that some of the names on that page are Michael. That makes sense when you consider the page as an enhanced disambiguation page, but would not make sense if the page were to be merged here. Matchups 02:34, 3 June 2007 (UTC)

Disagree As one of the few "gag" names that exists in the wild, it deserves it's own page.

Bob Wehadababyitzaboy

"A TV ad for 1-800-COLLECT, which chided the abuse of person-to-person collect calls to deliver messages without paying for them, featured a man calling his parents and claiming to be trying to reach "Bob Wehadababyitzaboy"."

From what I remember, this isn't true. While the gag name is right, the information about the commercial (creator, purpose, etc.) isn't right. I'll try to find a video of it to prove it later today. It really was a commercial by a new company, using satire in the form of Bob to say, basically, that "You don't have to keep doing this to get cheap calls, just use our service".

Hugh Jampton

In the BBC radio "Goon Show" episode 'The Battle of Spion Kop', first broadcast in 1958, Michael Bentine played the character Hugh Jampton. "Huge Hampton" uses rhyming slang of the place name "Hampton Wick" for prick or dick. Sofa King

I doubt that this is limited to Howard Stern. There is a commercial airing right now for an upcoming airing of something related to Stephen King on the Encore cable network. The announcer says "Sofa. King. Scary.", with accompanying imagery for each word. He then repeats it faster and faster, to where it sounds more like "So fucking scary" by the end.

Besides, I've heard the Sofa King commercial on other radio shows. Many of these same programs air a commercial around Christmas time for "Dickens Cider", or its alcoholic variant, "Hard Dickens Cider". RadioKAOS / Talk to me, Billy / Transmissions 11:08, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

In "Reality"? Really?

The section begins, "In the mid-1970s Jim Davidson and John Elmo frequently called..."

Who the hell are "Jim Davidson" and "John Elmo"? Brothers-in-law of whoever wrote the article? I've never heard of either of them; they aren't identified any further in the article, and the names aren't linked anywhere. Might as well have said that "John Doe" and "Bob Smith" made the calls.

Are "Jim Davidson" and "John Elmo" supposed to be examples of "gag names"? If so, how so?

Joe Mama

I tried to add Joe Mama (yo mama=your mother), the internet meme to the page but my edit got blocked, and the admin on the filter page told me to come here to get it added. If you haven't heard of it, the Joe Mama meme entails a person being asked a question, to which they respond with something about an unknown "Joe". When the identity of Joe is questioned ("Who's Joe?") the punchline response is "Joe Mama!". This is detailed at https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/dont-ask-who-joe-is-joe-mama , which I tried to use as a reference in my edit.

Could this please be added to the article, thank you.

Redirect discussion

The Dewey, Cheatem & Howe page has a tag stating "It has been suggested that this article be merged into Gag name" with a link here for discussion but there does not seem to be any discussion here so I'll start:

I Oppose the merger on grounds that Dewey, Cheatem & Howe has a significant number of entries which would only serve to overwhelm this page if merged. It is definitely enough to have a page of its own. There is also other info on the page, and there's really just no reason to merge. WestCD (talk) 00:35, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
