French River?[edit]

I lived my first 17 years on the banks of this river, and I never heard anyone call it anything but "French Creek," or in signage or old maps, "Riviere aux Boeufs". I suggest that this alternate name is probably not based in any community agreement, and should be deleted from the article unless a verifiable citation is presented within a reasonable amount of time. I re-edited the article to fix my previous error. It should have read the "Venango River." I also placed a reference in the lede. Sorry for the confusion. All is One (talk) 22:13, 26 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Onenga is not the Seneca word for mink[edit]

It is, however, a mistranscription of the Seneca word for "running water" - ohnégahdë:jö:h ("oh-negah-day-joe").

The Seneca word for mink is jío’da:ga’ ("gee-oat-dah-gay"), quite a different sound than "onenga" or "in nungash". It seems the colonial historians wrote down what they heard from the native speakers saying "the stream" or "the creek" and not in fact the specific name of the waterway, if it had one.
