Mathiassen and Inugsuk[edit]

The article erroneously states that the Inugsuk excavations in NW Greenland (where de Laguna accompanied Danish archaeologist Therkel Mathiassen in 1929) had to do with the Norse. This is incorrect. The excavated site belonged to a Thule-derived Inuit culture dated by Mathiassen to the fourteenth century AD. The finds included a stave-built wooden tub and a small figurine in what appeared to be Mediaeval European costume, suggesting that the occupants had been in contact with the Norse colonies further to the south, Mathiassen named the culture "Inugsuk" after the site. Mathiassen published a paper on the excavations in the "Meddelelser om Gronland" series, but the essentials may also be found in de Laguna's "Voyage to Greenland".--Death Bredon (talk) 21:02, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
