Why Antarctique[edit]

Can anyone explain why this colony was known as "Antarctique" when clearly is has nothing to do with the antarctic? Bazonka (talk) 11:37, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Antarctique" means "southern". Since Brazil is in the southern hemisphere, the French named the colony "Southern France", or "France Antarctique". Likewise, their later colony in Maranhão, close to to the Equator, was named France Équinoxiale.161.24.19.112 (talk) 12:36, 25 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
