Death of Ledyard[edit]

This article specifies which British officer killed Ledyard and how he was killed. However the article about the battle of Groton heights mentions two British officers. Nevertheless, a study done around 1900 cast doubt on the whole episode. I recall one conclusion in particular was that no one actually saw Ledyard killed. One person who claimed to be an eyewitness was much too far away to have seen. I think another instance was a person who saw the British enter the fort but didn’t actually see Ledyard killed. Another conclusion I remember clearly is that Ledyard was probably killed by a bayonet from his right side. One argument was that a British officer approaching Ledyard would have had a sword in his right hand. So it is unlikely that he took Ledyard’s sword in his left hand and thrust it through him. The article needs to be reviewed with a critical eye to sort out facts from folklore. Humphrey Tribble (talk) 23:57, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The episode as described in the article is quite literally carved in stone at the Fort. It is not folklore. —
