Recreating this page[edit]

I am recreating this page. It last existed in 2011 (old page id prior to merging). Since then, there have been many additional sources using the term. A quick Google search pulled this 2020 academic article; this 2022 article in Consumer reports; this 2016 ABC News article; this 2019 academic article; and this 2017 NBC News article, amongst others. I will admit that this is not the type of topic I usually write on, but I'll do my best here, and I'm confident I can, at the least, get out a serviceable stub. --Jerome Frank Disciple 16:40, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I should add: there's also been international efforts to create technology to address the phenomenon, some of which is now standard in certain car models. Canada, Israel, United States.--Jerome Frank Disciple 16:51, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I've created the stub. Some frustrations/concerns persist:

One frustrating thing about this is that it seems like 95% of media sources covering the phenomenon turn to David Diamond—nothing against him; it just means that he ends up being the source for a lot of claims in the article.
There are areas of this that I haven't covered here, including legal questions—Diamond and other psychology professors testify in cases around the world. I think it's possible to cover those issues without diving into each country's legal system (one basic question is whether there's any level of fault—Diamond and the others seem to say it's a subconscious phenomenon, while prosecutors have occasionally suggested it's negligence), but I'll leave that for another day.
I haven't really found many people who deny the phenomenon mentioned in reliable sources covering it. From what I can tell, the only times it's disputed is when prosecutors question its application to a specific case (or if they contend it amounts to negligence)
