Florence Mall[edit]

A picture of the water tower outside Florence Mall, which is notable for its "FLORENCE Y'ALL" signing, should be included in this article IMHO. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs, blog) 28 June 2005 20:30 (UTC)

Florence Y'All[edit]

I had been under the belief that the reason the name was changed to Florence Y'all was because it was illegal to advertise commercial venture (Florence Mall) on a government facility (public water tower), and changing the M to a Y was the most inexpensive and neutral change possible. --BakerQ 15:17, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's what I'd always heard, too, but when I did a little research to write the section, none of them described it that way. See http://www.americanprofile.com/issues/20060122/20060122_5001.asp for instance. (I wanted to cite a reference on the page, but I couldn't find one that was comprehensive, well-written, and that talked only about the Florence water tower.) Whatever the reason, I like the "Florence Y'all" and am glad it turned out like this. Also, it is pretty cool because it is so relevant in that the traveler going down I-75 gets their first real hint (other than some of the changes in flora-like mimmosa and magnolias- starting in about Cincinati) that they have passed into another region on their trip, the Upper South. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 4.224.0.28 (talk) 03:17, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Photo of Welcome Sign[edit]

John from Idegon Perhaps I should apologize for not commenting on the talk page before uploading a photo. I am referring specifically to this. It can be moved around the page if that would be better. I do feel it would be an addition to the article as it brings a bit of color to an article with very few images at all. Sixflashphoto (talk) 06:31, 5 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's not necessary to post on a talk page and seek approval prior to adding content. See WP:BRD. We're both doing this as directed. On Wikipedia, we don't use photos as decorations. They're supposed to illustrate some portion of the copy to help the reader understand it in a way words cannot. There is a place a photo of a welcome sign would be appropriate though. You could replace the existing photo of the water tower in the infobox with it. That particular photo is kinda an introductory or identity tag for the article. Typically, it is either a montage, a skyline view of the community, a photo of some feature the community is particularly known for, or a photo of something with the community's name on it, like your photo. I have no objection to switching your photo with the water tower simply because your photo is brighter and better composed. Others may object, especially the editor that originally added the water tower photo. My suggestion would be to let this set for a week and if there are no objections, make the switch. Thanks, Sixflashphoto. John from Idegon (talk) 15:02, 5 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a good idea. I'll let this sit for a week and make sure no one has any objections. Thank you for clarifying your position. Sixflashphoto (talk) 15:05, 5 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't notice that there was a section on the water tower. I'm going to go ahead and put your photo in the infobox and move the water tower photo to the section on it. That should make everyone happy! John from Idegon (talk) 15:16, 5 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like a great idea! -- Sixflashphoto (talk) 18:10, 15 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
