Class B[edit]

Maybe a bit ambitious for "my own" article, but I feel it does do the job relatively well.

Feel free to discuss here, and please use and fill out the checklist for B class Philip.t.day (talk) 17:38, 5 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'd say this is still lacking in several areas for B-Class.
  1. Referencing and citations: I'd expect to see a wider range of sources, and more secondary and fewer primary sources. Statements like "the default language of aviation worldwide is English" and "FISOs have the same powers as a controller to aircraft" should be cited. The phrasing of some sections worries me a little, it smells a little of close paraphrasing.
  2. Coverage and accuracy: It seems rather UK-centric, which may be fine if it really is a UK-specific role, but I rather doubt it; surely this is a role found in air traffic control systems all over the world, and the article should reflect that; with a move to a non-UK-centric name if necessary. Some sections seem overly-detailed: #Validation, for instance, probably fails WP:NOT#GUIDE. Some material on history and notable events would be appropriate.
  3. Structure: Fine, although most sections are too short. If there is enough material to expand them, they should be expanded, otherwise consolidate some headers. The ToC looks the right length and shape for a B-Class, but the content doesn't match up to it.
  4. Grammar & style: Fine.
  5. Supporting materials: entirely absent; surely there must be something on Commons which is at least tangentially relevant.
Overall, an excellent start; you could have been in with a very strong shot at WP:DYK if you had applied within the time limit. It basically feels a little 'young' for B-Class, which is not to say that it needs more time to get there, but rather just a little more TLC. Great work, however, and a shame that WikiProject Aviation doesn't use C-Class, which is definitely warranted. Happymelon 13:31, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have begun looking for more secondary sources, as well as addressing the specific issues you rasied in point 1. I will edit, to try to remove paraphrased areas.
As for the article being UK Centric, I believe that the role itself is too, as we use AFIS Aerodromes, as a half-way house between uncontrolled, and controlled airports. - I am willing for someone with more experience on the matter to comment here!
Regarding supporting materials, I originally did not add an image of a Control Tower, as I didn't want to mis-represent FISOs as ATCOs. But I have now put an image of the Heathrow Tower in the infobox, as it is tangentially related (and there is a good chance some FISOs work there!).
Yeah, it seems a shame I didn't think of trying for a DYK, next time perhaps!
Thank you for your input HM, it is much appreciated. Philip.t.day (talk) 12:08, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
