Ferula tingitiana or Ferula tingitana?[edit]

I'm assuming these are the same; if so we should correct to whichever is the accepted version. A google search shows some of each, but I'm not sure what is the reliable database for this kind of thing (ITIS doesn't have it, presumably because it is an African species). We mention this at Silphium as well as here. Kingdon 14:23, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious claim[edit]

The claim in the article:

Women in Central Asia as well as a small number in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina use these to induce abortion in first trimester.

Seems quite dubious on several grounds. Firstly, none of the medical usage sections for any of the derived drugs mention any abortifacient properties, and some are used as sunscreens without any contra-indications for pregnant women. Secondly, as all Ferula species are native to fairly remote parts of the "Old World", and thrive in a climate very different to the cool, wet Appalachians, it is difficult to see where these Appalachian cunning-women ever came across Ferula, never mind where they obtain a reliable supply. Thirdly, the claim was made by an anonymous user who has made only 9 edits and hasn't edited for over two years. Of the 9 edits, all but one consist of trivial grammatical and spelling corrections or minor rewordings; one also changes a date by one year. The only edit made by this anonym that introduces a substantial new claim is this one. -- 203.20.101.203 (talk) 04:08, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Silphium issue[edit]

"The Roman spice silphium probably came from a now extinct species of Ferula." The spice is laser (or sometimes laserpicium); the plant is laserpicium / silphium / silphion.

And 'probably' is stronger than the evidence really bears out ('silphium', 'laserpicium', 'laser' are applied both to the Cyrenaican variety that modern writers call "silphium" and to asafoetida, though the latter is admitted to be of far inferior taste. Even if it is accepted -- as seems likely but not certain -- that this is a difference of species rather than merely of variety, the idea that it was Ferula tingitana still remains. 128.194.250.68 (talk) 03:08, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
