Sub-disambiguation of FAT (File Allocation Table)[edit]

For the second time, user Clarityfiend deleted a number of sub-disambiguation entries for the FAT filesystem added by me long ago. While not absolutely required, I think, this sub-disambiguation can help users to find the desired information more quickly and easily, while not confusing users searching for other information. While our MOS:DAB does not specifically address this particular sub-disambiguation style, I have seen other disambiguation pages using this as well, therefore I am living under the impression that it is an accepted method used where appropriate. Therefore, I would like to see this included again, unless there are specific reasons why it should not be included. This is specifically addressed by WP:PTM. If anything, the variants should be (and probably are) listed in the main FAT article, not here. Without seeing those other dab pages, I'd venture to guess they're in error as well. Clarityfiend (talk) 00:50, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I can see WP:PTM at least partially applying here. It's still a mixed bag, though, as Microsoft often (incorrectly) uses the term "FAT" as direct synonym to "FAT12", "FAT16" or "FAT16B" in program messages and documentation, that is, they actually mean one of these FAT variants specifically rather than the whole family of FAT filesystems. In this particular context, expanding FAT to just File Allocation Table would not be 100% correct. What the user was looking for here by looking up FAT was actually FAT12, FAT16 or FAT16B, specifically. Therefore, I think, it would be justified to include the shortcuts.

It is, however, not a major issue, as these shortcuts are just redirects to anchors in the File Allocation Table article, so the user will find the desired information either way. It will just take a little bit longer. --Matthiaspaul (talk) 14:51, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
