First Fabless company

The list of fabless 'pioneers' seem at least 10 years after Consumer Micro Circuits, founded in 1968, designed but did not fabricate semiconductor devices. This company qualifies more than a simple design house (who designed a device for another company to manufacture) as CML designed, tested, packaged, marketed and then sold on the open market (e.g. FX101), the only bit they didn't do was fabrication. As far as I know they have never owned or part owned a fab house. Perhaps because they were not a US company they have not come to notice?

Self-promotion

"Fabless semiconductor company" is a very common term in the semi industry (and "Foundries" manufacture their designs), and the Xilinx story sounds right; I don't know the other company.

Western Design Center is a fabless semiconductor company and has been so since 1981.

Zilog was a fabless semiconductor company in 1976, well before Western Design Center. Zilog relied on Mostek for fab services, though they later built their own fab. --Brouhaha (talk) 23:01, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

LSI Computer Systems, Inc. (LSI/CSI)

LSI Computer Systems (neither affiliated with LSI Corporation nor Lear Siegler Incorporated)

According to the website of the Melville, New York-based company:

Founded in 1969, LSI Computer Systems, Inc. (LSI/CSI) began operations as the world's first fabless semiconductor company. Since its inception, LSI/CSI has been engaged in the design and production of Full Custom and Standard Integrated Circuits. Using a broad array of process technologies, LSI/CSI has produced ICs that extend from the consumer and industrial marketplace to military and aerospace applications.

I can understand being the first company to market by a matter of months. If you're lucky (maybe have good patents) first by several years. But first by over a decade? We must be reading about apples and oranges, or need better specific information about each of the claimed "firsts".

I've moved the image of this firm's building to the talk page because it was the only mention of the company in the entire article, and thus its presence in the article caused confusion (not to be confused with who?). We need better references than the firm's own website to establish their notability and the specific nature of their claimed "first." – Wbm1058 (talk) 20:29, 4 June 2012 (UTC)

CML

There were plenty of companies designing silicon chips which independent companies made much earlier, well before the term "fabless semiconductor company" was coined. How about CML and the FX101 frequency sensitive switch (used in Concorde amonst other places). This PMOS chip was manufactured for CML by Plessey and later Hughes. This chip dates from 1968.
