Racial bias[edit]

An IP-editor added at the end of the introduction:

"Black, Indigenous, poor and/or non-Black people of colour are disproportionately killed in extrajudicial killings by police and law enforcement agencies in many countries, especially and including, but not limited to, the US."

This addition has been reverted by user Materialscientist. I consent with that, but at the other hand I understand the addition in the light of the current situation following the death of George Floyd. Otto (talk) 20:55, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Another IP-editor added at the beginning of the paragraph regarding the United States:

"US police kill nearly 1000 people a year without trial. These killings disproportionately target black men."

This addition has been reverted by user Berrely for not providing a reliable source. There are reliable sources for the addition provided at Lists of killings by law enforcement officers in the United States. Specifically "The Use of Lethal Force by Police in the USA: Mortality Metrics of Race and Disintegration (2015–2019)", Journal of Social and Development Sciences. 5 (4): 30–35. This section has been completely removed, but the 1,000 per year figure for police killings is citeable [1] . It seems worth at least a sentence or two under the United States, at least until figures can be added for other countries. User_talk:167.201.243.113 15:21, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Lead paragraph rewritten without consensus[edit]

User Avcomth rewrote the lead paragraph July 14th 2022. User Kiwipete reverted this change July 15th with edit summary "I'm reverting these changes - there are POV words like legitimate, unintentionally, self-defense. The grammar also needs to be revised. Please take this to the talk page to seek consensus". User Avcomth again rewrote the lead paragraph the same day without seeking consensus at this talk page. I agree with the critical edit summary from Kiwipete. The claims Avcomth makes in his text are highly disputable and completely unsourced. I therefore revert the edits and join Kiwipete's request to take suggestions for the lead paragraph to this talk page to seek consensus. Otto (talk) 04:54, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot, @Otto ter Haar. I would also say that this article needs a lot of work, not only for such basics as date formats, but for a fairly comprehensive lack of citations. You seem to have done quite a bit of good work on this article, but could I ask you to include a citation for your edit related to Ayman al-Zawahiri? Thanks, Kiwipete (talk) 09:52, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I just added a link to the main article about the assassination. Otto (talk) 16:56, 2 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User Avcomth again rewrote the lead paragraph without seeking consensus. I reverted and added a message to his talk page User talk:Avcomth. Otto (talk) 07:30, 7 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Targeted Killings[edit]

It is a little difficult to explain, however in the Targeted Killings of the United States section, the use of "Among his victims" sounds kind of biased, in that the person writing does not believe the killings were legal and that Obama, Trump, and Biden has any right or authority to carry out the killings. I would change it however i am not sure how to rewrite it to make it that these killings occured and that they are controversal killings with some people argeeing that the Presidents had the right and the authority yet some people believe believing they did not. What do others think about the use the term "Among his victims"? NDNSWMI (talk) 20:08, 7 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I've made this change: "Those killed under this policy include". If this is acceptable, could the entry under President Joe Biden also be changed? Thanks, Kiwipete (talk) 05:24, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How are "extrajudicial killings" normally defined?[edit]

@Beland: According to this article's lead section, "extrajudicial killings" do not include deaths that result from warfare or police actions. What is the source of the definition given here? Jarble (talk) 19:41, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jarble: You're right to question that; it's only true for legal police and military actions, according to sources. I've tightened the language, added a cross-reference for the Vera Files page to the police exception, and found a source for the military exception. Thanks for your diligence, and further concerns or improvements are welcome. -- Beland (talk) 01:48, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
