Proposed changes[edit]

As the main editor of many Sesame Street articles, some of which have been improved to FA and GA status (including the main article, which is an FA), I'd like to tackle this article next. I was inspired by preparing Format of Sesame Street for FAC, as well as by the creation of "Elmo the Musical", which by all accounts ended "Elmo's World". I also have much of the sources needed to expand and improve this article, and the topic is discussed in many other SS-articles I've worked on. I have some ideas for the editors that watch this article to consider, especially since it's edited often, mostly by vandals and vandal-protectors. Perhaps if we improved it, the vandalism would decrease.

If I were to improve this article, it would be completely re-vamped, since as the tag states, there are multiple problems with its current version. Much of it is un-sourced. I'd like to remove the "Episodes" (it's un-sourced and the information can be gotten from Muppet Wiki) and "Internationally" (also un-sourced) sections, and I'd keep the "Characters" section. I'm undecided about the "Episodes format" section (also un-sourced), since much of this content could be in the sections I want to add ("History" and "Development", or depending upon the content, a combination of one section). What do folks think of these proposals? Discuss, please. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 18:45, 30 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please do. Most of this article seems to have been haphazardly added by IPs based on no obvious source. Trivialist (talk) 21:22, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Despite the fact that I've always said that a little of Elmo goes a long way, it was fun. I'm sure that there will be some vandalism, so we all need to keep an eye out. It may need protection. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 16:33, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good article?[edit]

This article is still not good enough because there is still not any TV screenshot of Elmo in Elmo's World. And plus, the Elmo article still has no picture. Qwertyxp2000 (talk) 02:29, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The GA criteria states that an article is: "Illustrated, if possible, by images". It doesn't state that it must be illustrated. There are simply no free images of Elmo, mostly because the Sesame Workshop is notoriously protective of its images, for good reason. Not that it has anything to do with this article, but this diff of Elmo shows that attempts have been made to illustrate it, but the available images were removed at Commons. That being said, I did add an image of Clash and Elmo; we'll see how long it lasts. Christine (Figureskatingfan) (talk) 05:10, 7 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Removed Episode Guide[edit]

I've removed this section entirely. It was mostly unsourced, list cruft, not fitting for an article previous rated as a good article, and was the cause of editing warring. I'd ask the editors involved to not to re-insert it without at least a good source. Thanks. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 23:54, 10 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: it's not clear what changes you want to be made. Please mention the specific changes in a "change X to Y" format and provide a reliable source if appropriate.  Spintendo  13:18, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Removing episode list[edit]

I fell into a rabbit hole of trying to fix up some broken template transclusion, and then trying to make the episode list consistent with IMDb because there was no existing source for the list and citing IMDb seems to be OK for things like episode lists (WP:CITEIMDB). However, because Elmo's World is a segment inside of Sesame Street, it's misleading to give them season or episode numbers.

The way IMDb does it is to say its season is the same as the Sesame Street season in which it appeared, and its episode number starts from 1 and is incremented by one as they appear in that season. For instance the first episode of Elmo's World appeared in Sesame Street episode 3786 (season 30). The second episode of Elmo's World appeared in Sesame Street episode 3786 (season 30). IMDb catalouges these as Season 30 Episode 1 and Season 30 Episode 2 respectively.

Fandom on the other hand lists them by the season and of Sesame Street they appeared in.

Given that there is likely no credible source for the episode lists for either Sesame Street or Elmo's World, IMDb and Fandom disagree on the episode numbering convention of Elmo's World, and that Wikipedia does not have a list of Sesame Street episodes, and Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information, I am removing the episode lists and replacing it with an external link to the Fandom for people who are interested. If you think this is a bad idea, please feel free to revert and discuss.

—motevets (talk) 18:13, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just a few points;
  • The issue with IMDB is that most of its details is user generated. This mean anyone can go to IMDB, insert incorrect information (episode details or otherwise), then come to Wikipedia and cite the same. This makes it an unreliable source.
  • Fandom has the exact same issue, just more obviously.
  • It should therefore come as no surprise when sources like these disagree with each other, and provide a good demonstration why they are not reliable.
I support removing this list on that basis. But furthermore guidelines on external links would suggest that Fandom should also not appear. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 11:29, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Escape Orbit: thank you for your thoughts, and thanks for your support removing the episode list. I have some thoughts about why we should include the external link to the Fandom site. I don't have a strong opinion about this, but I appreciate the conversation to help drive a better understanding.
I'm aware that we should in general not have external links to non-official fan sites, but I would argue that in this case the Fandom page to which I linked was an objective/NPOV list of episodes akin more to IMDb than a typical fan site. If you accept this premise, then I think the Fandom site can and should be linked per the guidance on Wikipedia:External_links/Perennial_websites#IMDb.
I personally think we should have both the link you provided and the Fandom list of episodes because they target different audiences and contain substantial different material. The official website does not contain a list of episodes and is targeted at parents of children looking for supplementary videos and activities. I think the Fandom site adds helpful further reading: not strong enough to site as a source, but valuable enough to link as an external link.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts. — motevets (talk) 14:12, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think what is discussed at WP:ELNO points 11 and 12 and apply. The content there is essentially a fansite wiki, and Wikipedia is not an internet directory. If someone is looking for unverifiable information supplied by other fans, then search engines will direct them to it easily enough. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 13:06, 22 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
