Temperature control?[edit]

I came here to find more about temperature control. I imagined, like many 3-setting devices, there were two different resistances of wire in the blanket, and 1 would turn on the higher resistance (less heat) wire, 2 the lower resistence (more heat) and 3 would turn on both. I find instead, on dismantling a failed blanket, that there is one heating wire and what looks like a fine sensor wire wrapped around it connecting separately into the controller (though this was not advertised as a safety feature). In the controller appear to be a series of diodes and one unidentified device. What's going on? --Hugh7 (talk) 01:37, 25 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Just speculating here, maybe the unknown device includes a variable resistor, which may save on wires compared to having two different loops for low and medium? Iamthinking2202 (talk) 12:27, 13 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

10 year old blankets?[edit]

Sounds like marketing harping on fear. Surely 10 years ago there were blankets that were safe. 10 years ago was not the stone age. Cite some sources please.

I think the following is more precise than just saying "10 year old electric blankets", with regards to safety:

"Electric blanket fires are largely a thing of the past. Since the standard for electric blankets was toughened up in 1988, most of the old problems of overheating and fires have disappeared. Each year, as more old blankets get replaced by safer new ones, the number of blanket-related fires continues to fall. They haven't entirely gone, however. In 2008 there were 26 fires caused by faulty electric blankets. We suspect most of these were older blankets, which should be checked each year without fail (see Safety checklist)."

Safety concerns section needs cleanup[edit]

It looks like it was copied directly from a website.

Also a "safety concern" is not quite the same as a "health concern" in general parlance. I would call a fire hazard a safety concern and radiation a health concern. How about two separate sections or one called "Health and safety concerns"? Zip-x (talk) 15:13, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaning[edit]

The article has no information on how electric blankets are supposed to be cleaned. In this era of bacteria and bedbugs I'm sure many people are concerned about how to launder bedding.
