Needs expansion[edit]

Its eruption affected the global atmosphere, and was one of the volcanic eruptions of the 20th-century which had the strongest effects on the atmosphere (behind Pinatubo). A lot of information could be added from an article in the Nov. 1982 National Geographic. The nearest town was Pichucalco (see Municipalities of Chiapas). casualties[edit]

the List_of_volcanic_eruptions_by_death_toll claims this volcano killed 3500 people, but this article only states ~2000 so I wonder if there is more info. EdwardLane (talk) 15:57, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

ok this looks like the best link I can find at the moment it suggests 2000 dead. EdwardLane (talk) 16:08, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"El" Chichonal?[edit]

No, it was never called "el Chichonal" since "el" is spanish and Chichonal is Mayan. In fact it wasn't called "El Chichon" until the spanish speaking news media started reporting on it after the 1982 eruption. I want to change "El Chichonal to "Chichonal" as it was and is still called in the region. Senor Cuete (talk) 23:24, 20 March 2012 (UTC)Senor Cuete[reply]
