"Eger" in Polish[edit]

There is written "Polish: Jagier" or something like this. You know, I am Polish and I have never heard before such word, we definitely say just "Eger" ;)

These foreign city names must be quite archaic... like on Miskolc's page it's stated that its Slovak name is Miskovec but when I was in Slovakia all road signs mentioned it as Miskolc. (btw Hungarian road signs say Kosice instead of Kassa so they might as well return the favour :) anyway, if Polish ppl don't call Eger "Jagier" then I'm gonna remove it, but actually I liked that Eger has different names in so many languages... gives the town a more international feeling :) Alensha 14:33, 25 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Minaret[edit]

Interesting that you mention that Eger hosts the northernmost minaret of Europe and one of only three existing minarets in Hungary. I remember I was told like that when I visited Eger in 1994, and for many years I beleived it was true. That was until I visited Kamianets-Podilskyi (Ukraine)

In the article Subdivisions_of_the_Ottoman_Empire you can see that Podolya was a Eyalet of the Ottoman Empire from 1674-1699. And on the map that goes with the article, you can see that Kamniets Podolski lies North of Erlau. Since the miniaret in Kamianets-Podilskyi survived to date, I would say that northernmost minaret of Europe is a bit too bald a statement. Any opinions?

Jegar, Jegra, Jáger, ...[edit]

Look on the Croatian Wiki what they say about Eger - they just don't call it "Jegar"! They say, however, that there is an archaic Slavic name of this city, but, apparently, no-one uses it any more. I think, it is good that they give this information to the Croatian readers, because they might be interested in it. But, why on earth has to stay here this information of explicitely Croatian interest, here, on English wiki?! What is more, it stays right in the first, introductory sentence of the article?! I know, User PANONIAN is pushing these things, but, on the other hand, there are settlements in Vojvodina region with thousends of Hungarian speaking people, and he wouldn't let put the names of those places in Hungarian language, even if those names are not "archaic". If I am not mistaken, there are hardly any Serbs, Poles, Slovaks living in the city. Anyway, as it is said above, Poles and Slovaks usually call Eger with it's current official name, and hardly anyone in Poland, or in Serbia, I guess, would know what is Jáger, or Jegar respectively. It would be perhaps good, if Serbian wiki useres would write first an article on Eger, and give it's archaic name there. I left the German and the Latin names of the city in the introductory sentence, because 1). there are some Germans living in and around the city, 2). the German and Latin name of Eger might be important for English readers too for historical reasons: most of the old documents on the city were written in these languages with it's German and Latin names respectively. --Vedran.b 00:00, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I do not know about the situation in Croatia, but the official and obligatory Slovak name of Eger is Jáger. The form is used in all historic contexts. I do not know about the situation of precisely this town but present-day northern Hungary was populated (also) by Slovaks at least up to the 13th century. Juro 16:29, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bishop of the Serbian Orthodox church known as "bishop of Jegar" had seat in this town, and town was also part of the Ottoman Empire, so you have no reason to remove historical Serbian, Turkish and other names of the town. Also, I certainly "do not push those things" - it is you, Vedran, and other Hungarian nationalists who push Hungarian names for towns in Serbia, Romania, Slovakia, etc, but in the same time you delete non-Hungarian names for the towns in Hungary (very nice job...). Of course, there is no reason to post those names in the first sentence of the article, but "Name" section would be good place for them... PANONIAN (talk) 14:52, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As for the "Name" section, I completely agree with you. Other objections of you are pointless; you just should read more carefully the reason written abouve why were the archaic names of Eger removed from the introductory sentece of the article. There were ethnic Hungarian Catholic bishops in Belgrade, should we then perhaps write in the introductory sentence of the Serbian capital Nándorfehérvár, that is to say, the city's archaic name in Hungarian? By the way, there are thousends of Hungarians living in Belgrade and around it still today. PANONIAN, you seem to be the one who is nacionalistic. And also inconsistent. Vedran, you did not removed those names from "introductory sentence of the article", but you removed them from the article. There is big difference between two things. Regarding Hungarian name for Belgrade, I do not see why it cannot be mentioned in the article about Belgrade, in the "Name" section. And please provide a proof that I am "nacionalistic and inconsistent" before saying that. Thank you. PANONIAN (talk) 12:18, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
