Edward A. Carter, Jr. was a Staff Sergeant throughout his World War 2 tour of duty, and during his actions for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor. During his re-enlistment he was promoted to the rank of Sgt. The "unique type of organization"[edit]

The sentence is vague and the thought is incomplete, but most important it is somewhat wrong, and definately misleading.


A "provisional" unit in the US military is one that is established without the approval of the Pentagon. Specifically, each type of unit has a TOE (Table of Organization and Equipment) which details what and how many things get assigned to the unit (including people). Provisional units are created in an ad hoc manner as needed by the authority of the Commanding General (usually a Corp Commander, but sometimes a Division Commander). All Provisional means in this case is that the unit is not conforming to the "approved" TOE for any existing unit type.

Provisional units were hardly unique. During the end part of the war (WW2), many of the non-Infantry elements of the Divisions were cannibalized for troops to feed into Infantry units (which were highly depleted due to combat loses) and to create new ad hoc elements on the line to face off the German Infantry.
