This page really oughtta be protected[edit]

To Johnxxx9: If you think that Edit should redirect to editing, then you should first move the dab page to Edit (disambiguation), not just remove the material without comment.   • Oppose. At first, it appears like there is an obvious primary topic: "edit" often refers to an action that's part of the process of editing (as defined in the article). However, the term has a range of other meanings too (see wikt:edit). For example, most of the time when I make an "edit" to a computer file using a text editor, I'm not engaging in an editorial activity, I'm just making a change to it. An "edit" of a film is a particular version of it (e.g. fan edit); in a film it's another name for cut (transition). An "edit" of a gene is a deliberately induced targeted mutation. These topics are all missing from the dab page now, and I'm going to add them.
    The usage statistics are also relevant here. The clickstream dataset shows that among the article links on the dab page, the one for Editing was followed 135 times in March. That accounts for about 60% of the ongoing article traffic, but it's a very low number if compared with the total views of the dab page for the same month: over 2,100 [1]. These are two different datasets, so the data isn't directly comparable, but the inevitable conclusion is that most visitors of the dab page do not click on any of the article links. This can mean either that they're looking for articles not currently listed there (like the ones I mention above), or that they click through to the project pages linked in the hatnote (like Help:Editing; project pages aren't included in the clickstream dataset). – Uanfala (talk) 21:00, 1 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I think the major point of disagreement here is between what the start of the article editing suggests it's going to be, and what the rest of the article is. It starts: Editing is the process of selecting and preparing written, photographic, visual, audible, or cinematic material used by a person or an entity to convey a message or information. And that really should include those suggestions of yours. Changing a file with a text editor is selecting and preparing written material. Editing a film is selecting and preparing cinematic material. "Editing" a gene isn't explicitly covered, but it is still selecting and preparing material. All those things could be and, I'd argue, should be there. But the most of the article seems to be written as though it's just about editing specifically as it relates to the occupation of editor of printed material. I still think that edit should redirect there, but also that that article should be much more comprehensive whether this move happens or not. Egsan Bacon (talk) 03:51, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, all these uses are obviously related, and one can easily see how they may have come about. But still, they constitute a set of related meanings of a word, rather than aspects of an encyclopedic topic.
