Rewrite[edit]

I've made an effort to apply Wikipedia's standards for inline citations to this article. Unfortunately, my available references do not correspond in every respect to the article as it was previously written, so I've basically rewritten and expanded it.

Suggested future updates for which I currently lack good citations:

- Some mention of Davis's reputation for worse-than-typical antipathy towards blacks

- Under "Aftermath," a mention of Special Field Orders 15, granting land to freed slaves. Stanton prompted Sherman to issue this order due to political concern for the freedmen's welfare, which had been exacerbated at least partially by the Ebenezer Creek incident.Rob (talk) 17:08, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
