Hi,
I was just wondering if you had a reference for the death of the current Earl of Carrick. He was a friend of my grandfather and I wanted to determine that the information was accurate before I tell him.

I suggest that this article is misleading in showing only the "Three cups" shield. This shield is associated with the senior branches of the Butler family, such as the late Marquisate of Ormonde.
The Carrick shield is properly described as “Or a chief indented azure a crescent for difference”.
The shield “Or a chief indented azure” is illustrated on the Wikipedia thread “Butler dynasty” and is there explained as being the achievement of Theobald FitzWalter the primogenitor of the dynasty.
As I understand it, Edmund Butler the 1315 Earl of Carrick would have carried the FitzWalter shield.
Because John Butler of Clonamicklon was his second son he carried the same shield marked with the “crescent for difference”. This convention is explained in the Wikipedia thread “Cadency”, where the crescent is image 2 in the first illustration.
That crescent for difference remained on the shield as the heirs to John, starting with General Butler, became Viscounts Ikerrin and in due course Earls of Carrick to the present day.
Is there a contributor who has the technical capacity to replace the Butler cups, illustrated on this thread, with the more appropriate shield of the present Earl of Carrick ?Rupert Butler (talk) 18:24, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
