Sarah's thick accent[edit]

Sarah sings in an accent that is often very noticeable and distinct, at least to my mostly US-English-trained ears. For example, her "same thing between us" is pronounced something like "sem thin betwin uz", if I may exaggerate a little). Is this properly termed a Geordie accent, or is it some other dialect? I know she joined the band in Newcastle, but that doesn't mean she was necessarily from there. Right, I've just listened to the song with that lyric in it and to my ears hers is not a Geordie accent, but is clearly from somewhere in the north of England - just not that far north. The article says she was born in Halifax and sure enough the way she sounds on that song is definitely consistent with her being from Yorkshire. Listen about a third of the way through the song to the way she sings "you're conversation's tired and I know". "Know" here is pretty distinctive, to add to the way she sings "same" and other words with the "same" vowel. To hear a young woman with a Geordie accent, have a listen to this interview with Cheryl Cole. To digress, I was prompted to comment on this by my surprise at reading that Dubstar were formed in Jesmond, which is just over the river from where I live in Gateshead. About the only Dubstar song I'd heard until now was Stars, which I have a vivid memory of hearing in a car in Hungerford in the mid 1990s (I can even remember it was on 2-Ten FM - isn't it crazy what your mind retains?). Interestingly, her accent isn't anywhere near as noticeable in that song, and I associated Dubstar with that part of the country (purely cos of that memory), so was surprised to see they were a Northern group. 62.31.190.206 (talk) 10:53, 19 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
