Michigan Avenue Bridge name[edit]

(copied from User talk:Alanscottwalker) For other bridges on the Chicago river, the official name is really an honorary title that is mostly ignored (witness the Irv Kupcinet Bridge or the Marshall Suloway Bridge). My feeling is that the same will be true for the Michigan Avenue Bridge, and that we should continue to call it as such, whilst acknowledging the official name in a similar way as we do in the other articles. My thoughts? We should go by whatever its official name is and I think a note for honorary title in the info box would be nice, and also a text section on honorary title and its naming history, if someone has that info. Further thought, as I now understand you are saying the official title is the honorary title. I have no problem with a convention that organizes these bridges by geographic title, I think that is common usage in Chicago, (ie by street name). Somehow we should document official title. Yes, the official title will be DuSable Bridge, but I'm fairly sure that in reality that will be treated as an honorary title. Wikipedia guidelines are to use the common name, but there are notable exceptions to this such as Willis Tower (arguably). I suggest that the opening line be "Michigan Avenue Bridge (officially DuSable Bridge) is a…" for now, at least until it becomes clear that the DuSable name is being routinely used by reliable sources.—Jeremy (talk) 13:42, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have a problem with any of your suggestions. If the city were to put up a big sign next the the Michigan Avenue sign on the side of the bridge, that might bring the name into a wider usage but I do have some observations and concerns about this all being documented. In the examples you provided of the other bridges it actually lists the "official name" as the geographic name but you suggest that is false info. Also, my question is, what should the user searching for "DuSable Bridge" get?Alanscottwalker (talk) 13:54, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To answer your last question first, whichever way is chosen a redirect can be used for the other name, like this: DuSable Bridge. The other two bridges have plaques on them that give the official names as Irv Kupcinet Bridge and Marshall Suloway Bridge, but you will be hard pressed to find those names in use anywhere else. I didn't go to the ceremony this morning, but I assume that a similar plaque was unveiled on Michigan Avenue Bridge.—Jeremy (talk) 14:01, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the info, I was unaware of this (sounds like) recent name change. At any rate, it sounds like the other bridge articles do need correction. I think the redirect you made makes sense for the reasons you stated concerning "common name." On a more meta note, perhaps the powers that be should come up with a "renaming convention" for all articles about places (as this issue is likely to reoccur and this common usage rule seems particularly slippery and un-encyclopedia like, imo)Alanscottwalker (talk) 14:20, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The plaque on the Wabash Avenue Bridge states that it was renamed in 1985; LaSalle Street Bridge was renamed in 1999. I think that COMMONNAME is a deliberately vague guideline in order to try to help people find compromises in article naming debates, but some of those debates can still get pretty nasty (as was the case with Willis Tower). —Jeremy (talk) 14:43, 16 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I can see that, I also think that common name rule lumps together allot of different things: stage names, personal names and scientific names. And does not discuss place names at all. which strike me as different. At any rate, perhaps this is not the place to discuss the other bridges but I can't tell if you are saying, they are currently accurate with respect to the official name listed in the info box or that they are inaccurate but should remain that way?
