Untitled[edit]

This should be moved to Dragonchess, as the original article and most of the references to Gary Gygax's game are one word. I'll formally try and get moved when the article currently at Dragonchess is deleted, or if it looks like it's going to stay.--Prosfilaes (talk) 22:50, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, the article at Dragonchess that was on a chess program for the Dragon (computer) was deleted, so I moved this article over the now empty spot.--Prosfilaes (talk) 22:34, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Picture request[edit]

No one has ever made a commercial set, and I doubt that any good looking sets are extant--and in any case, the pictures would likely have copyright issues with the figurines. We could add a picture of the open source version on Sourceforge or a quick and dirty version tossed together of whatever random uncopyrighable pieces were at hand.--Prosfilaes (talk) 05:22, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

well, the are some nice looking pictures of sets here which we may be able to persuade the authors to release under CC/PD. As for the figurines, I honestly don't know enough about copyright law to asses that; however one would think that if the set was made using TSR figures, it would come under fair use as they originally published the game.--UltraMagnusspeak 08:57, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
True; I encourage you to make the request. Given that TSR/WotC/Hasbro never published a DragonChess game, I hesitate to say that pictures of their miniatures as DragonChess pieces would be fair use, as they're not necessary to show off a DragonChess board. We could use the one with the paper pieces or the one using the standard chess pieces, for example.--Prosfilaes (talk) 15:28, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A different product by the same name?[edit]

A game called "Dragon Chess" was designed by one Lex Parker (2005)-- the opening array of pieces is flanked by the addition of a dragon piece on each side that moves like a short range queen (traveling up to three squares); the pawn rank is extended by an additional pawn. The dimensions of the board are also increased. An XBOX 360 version of this game also exists. Not sure how to proceed, not sure how popular Gygax's game is compared to Parker's game etc. --ButterSoda (talk) 01:04, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I tried adding that to the artical and somebody deleted it for no apparant reason. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.57.160.241 (talk) 13:10, 12 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The article is not about chess variants with "Dragon" in their titles, it is about Gary Gygax's game Dragonchess. So I'm sure the person who deleted your add did so on that basis. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 21:36, 1 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If an article existed, a hat note could certainly be justified.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:55, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure I'm following. Okay, article history shows removal was based on being unreferenced. What is the preferred Wiki fix?: add reference, or add new article Dragon Chess distinct from Dragonchess? (Note: Dragon chess currently redirects to Dragonchess. And, "Dragon Chess" is also synonym for Christian Freeling's variant "Loonybird Chess.") Ihardlythinkso (talk) 04:18, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I just re-created Dragon Chess as a redirect. (I was the one who created the Dragon chess redirect as well.) I don't see any page for "Looneybird Chess," but if one is created, "Dragon Chess" could become a disambiguation page instead. The Bearded One (talk) 06:04, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I might create it sometime; as for now there are only references, at Dragonfly (chess variant) and at Christian Freeling. Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 06:28, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(gawd!)?[edit]

What does this mean? How do these pieces move? Be more specific.24.215.92.93 (talk) 01:13, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thx for the msg! All pieces have *some* def; completeness & accuracy to follow. (Meantime The Chess Variant Pages has the best defs.) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 03:45, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Update: Move defs are near complete & perfect now (w/ exception of possible specs re blockability of triagonal move paths). (Might incorporate those details later if can find a generic or detail way to do it simply w/o mucking up the clarity; the defs are already [necessarily] complex enough – gawd!) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:47, 30 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I got the Basilisk wrong, but User:Howard McCay has corrected it. Ihardlythinkso (talk) 03:40, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sample game!?[edit]

Would love to add a good sample game! (If someone has, please add or send the gamescore to me – thx!) Ihardlythinkso (talk) 08:56, 30 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • I have a sample game between myself and an algorithm I designed. It demonstrates the game, but the algorithm doesn't play very well. Still interested? (I'd rather post a game between two humans.) The Bearded One (talk) 06:00, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Prefer humans too. (Especially if she is good-looking.) I think your game is prob better than nothing; it could be supplanted once a human game was contributed. p.s. Incredible you wrote a program on this complex game! (What lang?) Ok, Ihardlythinkso (talk) 06:34, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't say that I wrote a computer program. I'm not a programmer; I only wrote out a step-by-step contingent algorithm for playing Dragonchess. At the present, it requires the interpretation of a human. At some point in the future, a talented programmer may code it, but that is very unlikely to be me. I'll try to post the game transcript sometime tomorrow. The Bearded One (talk) 06:52, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
