Was this song ever used as a civil rights movement anthem in the United States? I know it originated much earlier, but some of the lyrics (e. g. "send it in care of the Birmingham Jail" (see Letter from Birmingham Jail) are coincidentally similar to the struggles of Martin Luther King Jr. and the other civil rights workers, and I wouldn't be surprised if at least some of them began using it as an anthem.
