Expenses[edit]

According to The Telegraph, Carswell was heavily involved in the expenses scandal [1] - yet it's not record here. I feel the article is incomplete without this and would like to add it in as a seperate section as per other MPs/ former MPs who were specifically named and implemented.

Any objections?

Richardeast (talk) 15:00, 22 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ok... no objections after 6 months so I have updated accordingly! --Richardeast (talk) 12:30, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. It should go in the section related to that part of his life: as you just reverted, despite having suggested it yourself! It's not important enough to go in the introduction and replace his role in ousting Michael Martin, which all reliable sources will point to as, along with his championing of localism and Euroscepticism, the defining point of his career. Bastin 14:19, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Bastin, Happy for that to happen - just seemed logical given the introduction stated how 'He found prominence by calling for reform of parliamentary expenses before the 2009 expenses scandal' to also detail his own involvement in that same scandal!
Though I see you've unilaterally changed Keith D and my edits again, despite a) me specifically asking you not to and b) not requesting the communities opinion. Please WP:AGF and seek a consensus view before changing anyone elses work.
As I said, I'm happy for details about his expenses claims to be listed elsewhere, but if we are mention the expenses scandal in the opening paragraph, we must be balanced! But, if you're happy with me moving all the information regarding the expenses section to its own section (as per other MPs caught up in the scandal) I will edit accordingly.
Though you say 'reliable sources' point to his role ousting Michael Martin - well, we should list the sources! But the only thing I can find is an article, written by himself for the daily mail which he titled 'Fearless Tory becomes first MP to call for Speaker to quit' and I'm not sure self written pieces can be considered proof of having a role in that WP:IRS --Richardeast (talk) 14:53, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be the first to say that the article is very badly referenced (and, to an extent, written). But look for news articles about Carswell and ousting Martin dominates them. Bastin 14:57, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
[2] seems to do the job --Richardeast (talk) 15:02, 17 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not very balanced[edit]

This article is so biased. It almost sounds like he wrote it himself!

I'm not sure the purpose of a wikipedia article, is to just list, from a conservative point of view, why everything someone has done has been right................! I read controversial, occasionally bemusing stuff about this guy all the time. None of it's even hinted at in the article.

Cjmooney9 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 09:16, 6 September 2011 (UTC).[reply]

I agree, it's terribly fawning. Sounds like some sort of personal promotion tool. Rewrite needed. Contaldo80 (talk) 08:39, 26 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's obvious it was written by him or one of his underlings. Needs a total overhaul - this individual is actually regarded in a very different light in his own country and virtually none of it is reflected here. 9 (talk) 12:08, 14 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Carswells Sudden Defection To UKIP Causes Negative Article Edit Activity[edit]

What on earth is going on? Carswell defects to UKIP and suddenly a flurry of negative edits appear, a paranoid person might suggest political interference with Wikipedia. Twobells (talk) 10:35, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that there are going to be a lot of negative edits to this article over the coming days. I have refereed the article for protection. This will prevent anons and new accounts form editing it. Gaia Octavia Agrippa Talk 11:22, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Gaia, if you need a secondary let me know as it looks like we'll have to make a number of reverts in the coming days. Twobells (talk) 11:49, 28 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

POV/Advert[edit]

This article reads as plain election promo for an upcoming election. It should be neutralized ASAP. Wikipedia is not a medium for electioneering. The Banner talk 21:33, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Agreed. Even by the standards of politicians bios, this is a less than neutral mess. StuartDouglas (talk) 20:04, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Can you give examples of where there is inbalance? JASpencer (talk) 20:07, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Even worse than imbalance - simple incorrect citation, used in error presumably. I have just removed a claim, for instance, that Carswell is considered one of the most principled of MPS - he may well be, but the source used does not say this at all. As for lack of neutrality, lines like 'Carswell caused waves in the political world by leading a campaign' are obviously not neutral in tone. StuartDouglas (talk) 20:14, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Some of the claims are partially but not fully based on Guardian sources. I've largely given up on UKIP articles as there seem to be many wp:SPAs not following Wikipedia principles but this references a Spectator article calling his magazine "one of the founding texts of the new, revitalised Toryism"] whilst this refers to him as being "a popular, hard-working and principled local MP" JRPG (talk) 13:23, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Problematic editing[edit]

Just a reminder that there is always WP:RFPP if there are issues with editors adding uncited / POV material. A request for semi-protection will generally be complied with if there is a problem. Mjroots (talk) 20:46, 10 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganisation of this page?[edit]

This page is rather confusing and seems to need reorganising chronologically to separate out the Tory and UKIP elements of Carswell's parliamentary career. For example, the present subsection on the Clacton by-election in 2014 is followed by further subsections on both the 2010 'Parliamentary expenses scandal' and Carswell's 'Influence in the Conservative Party' which clearly pre-date it (and his views in the 'Political positions' section span both periods). I suggest merging the existing 'Early life and education' section and the opening paragraphs of the 'Life and career' sections into a single 'Early life' section, to allow the 'Member of Parliament' section to be brought up a level. If others are happy for me to do so, I'd be willing to have a go at trying to sort it out - though it will be a few days before I get a chance to get down to it.JezGrove (talk) 23:24, 12 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

BLP noticeboard[edit]

Section = 109 BLP articles labelled "Climate Change Deniers" all at once. This article was placed in a "climate change deniers" category. After discussion on WP:BLPN and WP:CFD the category was deleted. Peter Gulutzan (talk) 16:14, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In office dates[edit]

Do we need to list him in office as an MP twice - would it not be beater to says he's been the MP for Clacton/Harwich since May 2010 (and put in brackets that the office was vacant from 29 Aug - 10 Oct)? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paulharding150 (talkcontribs) 16:33, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
