I rewrote the article completely. This is an encyclopedia, not a fansite, and the writing should reflect that. I also eliminated the bibliography, since it was wikified to no purpose whatsoever, with most of the links nonexistent, and most of the working links to totally random subjects.--192.35.35.34 16:38, 17 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:361-cover.jpg

File:361-cover.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Goes on an absurd tangent about his wife

This is an article about Donald E. Westlake, not his wife. I don't think there should be so much information about his wife. It's totally irrelevent. I'd like to hear some other opinions regarding this. I mean, give his wife her own article. The article is about Donald E. Westlake, so all of the extraneous stuff about his wife seems kind of absurd. I'm going to give it a few weeks, and if no one gives any good reasons why that stuff should remain in the article, I'm going to delete most of it. It's extraneous, tangential, and irrelevent stuff. It seems to me to be fan club kind of information. Yeah, she's good at gardening. Well, maybe so. But how is that relevent? - Runt (talk) 00:52, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Major Error

It's a total misreading to call Tom Jimson "hardboiled to the point of absurdity". Jimson is a criminal psychopath, and any psychologist will recognise it as being an excellent portrait of that very serious pathology. I'm about to edit that line accordingly. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.22.201.70 (talk) 20:16, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Link to video removed by bot

I'm going to put it back in since it's of interest to readers interested in Westlake. However, it may take a while: there's some technical stuff that needs to be added to the link which I need to check out. Modal Jig (talk) 12:57, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

What does "memorium" mean? Goochelaar (talk) 14:42, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
In memoriam or In memorium ("in the memory of"), a Latin phrase. --NERIUM (talk) 13:55, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, it was the "u" that did not sound right. I am going to fix it. Goochelaar (talk) 18:27, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
But the actual title of the YouTube piece is "Donald Westlake Memorium" and I think that's what should be used regardless. If the producer of the piece wants to rename the video, then I could see changing it here. Modal Jig (talk) 19:37, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
I see your point, but I have a doubt: is the video's actual title "Donald Westlake Memorium"? It does not appear, I believe, during the piece itself, and it might be just how whoever uploaded it on YouTube called it. What is it, by the way? A TV show? An original compilation by pexw (the YouTube uploader)? So, if it is an actual title, even if creatively spelt, I agree that it can be reinstated in the article. If it is little more than a tag put on it by somebody, much less so. And in any case, it is something made "in memoriam" of DEW, so it is not wrong in any case. Thanks for pointing out the interesting video, anyway! Goochelaar (talk) 14:36, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
I changed it back, added quotations marks around the title of the page/video(?) and added a little info about the video. Modal Jig (talk) 16:57, 19 April 2010 (UTC)
FYI - I'm pexw, aka, Paul Westlake, Donald's youngest son. I made the video for his memorial service and "memorium" is the correct spelling in the title. Using an "a" is more common but the word is acceptable with both spellings. Pewestlake (talk) 00:55, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Donald Westlake: New York City Personified video

The bot removed the link I added to external links. It's Donald's take on the way to cast New York City in a detective novel. Thought it might be of interest to fans. No idea how to get it to stick. If the group reaches consensus on including it, someone else will have to make it happen. Pewestlake (talk) 01:07, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Campus Doll v. Campus Lovers

I changed the 2nd Campus Doll in the bibliography to Campus Lovers. Westlake's web site lists Doll as 1961 and omits Lovers. However, I thinks these are actually reversed - Lovers is Monarch #334 (35 cents), Doll is Monarch #485 (50 cents). I'll bet Lovers is actually 1961 and Doll is actually 1963. See the book covers at: http://vintagesleazepaperbacks.wordpress.com/2010/01/24/edwin-west-who-was-he/ David M. Hennessey (talk) 20:46, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Nice catch! I suspect you're right, but until there's more solid proof, we'll just have to leave it as is, i suppose.
I'm the one who put the bibliography together in its current format some time ago. I have so far left out the Alan Marshall stuff, as it was more-or-less a house pseudonym used by a number of authors, and sorting out which works were actually Westlake's is a daunting (and perhaps pointless) task. Any thoughts? 70.29.14.52 (talk) 20:42, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
I'm taking over Donald's official website in the next month or so. Part of my mission will be to create an authoritative bibliography, including photos of covers and copyright pages, for every edition of every book published since The Mercenaries, for starters. His earlier work will be harder to unearth but that's a long-term goal. I may have a definitive answer for you within several months. Pewestlake (talk) 01:07, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
Remember our rather persnickety rules about verifiability: we've gotta have published sources, not unpublished correspondence and the like, counter-intuitive though that certainly seems to a lot of the authors we've written about here. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:30, 26 July 2011 (UTC)
