Dog-show judgeDog show judge

  • The phrase "dog show" never has a hyphen, even when used in this context. Anndelion (talk) 23:25, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sometimes if a compound noun "A B" without a hyphen is used in another compound, that new compound is written "A-B C" to show which pair of words combines first, or to show that the A component is not an adjective describing a compound noun "B C". Anthony Appleyard (talk) 09:45, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's true. However, I have always seen them referred to as "dog show judges", not "dog-show judges" -- for example, here's the AKC judge rulebook: [1]
This is in no way definitive proof, but I think it's worth mentioning that when "dog show judge" is searched for on Google, there is one result in the first few pages that includes the hyphen, and many more that don't (including Kansas State University's 4H program). In my opinion, this does show that it is more frequently written without the hyphen, so it seems as though this page should be moved. I personally feel the risk of confusion is low, although others may feel differently.
Thank you. -- Anndelion (talk) 10:44, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. This is not normally hyphenated in English, and the grouping is unambiguous... if grouped the other way, it would mean a dog who was also a show judge. I don't think anyone will think that this meaning is intended here. Andrewa (talk) 06:55, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
