Recent corruption/changes to Disc Dog article[edit]

10-4-2006 Recently, someone from ip address 209.106.223.194 was causing corruption in the Disc Dog article, specifically in the paragraph about Ashley Whippet. The corrupted article was removed, and the note "Removed it because it didn't add much information other than romanticized opinion." was added. The information in the paragraph is fact, not opinion: "Ashley Whippet, widely considered to be the greatest frisbee dog ever," I participate in the sport, I am around it all the time. The people who were around when Ashley was competing and performing are still involved in the sport. They will tell you this. While it is technically opinion, it is a fact that many people do indeed hold this opinion.

" went on to win 3 World Championships," Fact. 1975, 1976 and 1977 World Champion.

"perform at the White House for a young Amy Carter," Fact.

"perform during the half-time at Super Bowl XII," Fact.

"and even starred in an Academy Award-nominated short documentary entitled Floating Free." Fact.

"Though many great dogs have come along since Ashley, he is still the standard by which all others are measured." Again, though declaring Ashley to be the standard is in itself an opinion, it is a fact that every frisbee dog judge today holds this opinion.

This is the history of the sport. Ashley Whippet was hugely important to the sport, and the people that worked with Ashley are still involved today. The history of this sport is not something to disregard. It is extrremely appropriate that information about Ashley Whippet be contained in any encyclopedia entry about the sport of canine disc.

To this end, I reverted the article back to the last good one (ie, before corruption.)

In addition, I changed the inning of the 1974 Dodger Stadium stunt to the correct one-it was the 8th inning. I called Alex Stein and asked him myself.

New information added to Disc Dog article[edit]

Not sure who Epopp is, but they have made several changes to the article lately that are in fact incorrect. Note about UFO information[edit]

I have updated the information on this article. The UFO did not merge with AWI. The UFO has not announced a location its finals (It will NOT be in Japan.) Whoever is making these changes, please get in contact with someone involved in the organization in question before adding this kind of info. Eyebum - Thanks for the clarification. I do not know much about the Disc dog sport, other than what I researched in an effort to update the article. I was cleaning up the famous dogs list and I was initially confused by the three championships that Ashley won. I tried to elaborate on the history and status of the championship event in the Frisbee Dog World Championship article and then I attempted to update the Disc dog page to reflect that information.
(1) Frisbee Dog World Championships: To the extent that I was consistent in the Disc dog and Frisbee Dog World Championship articles, there may be mistakes in the latter page as well. Since you are involved with the UFO, maybe you could take a look at that page too?
(2) UFO: Sorry about the mistake regarding the location of the UFO World Cup. I got that from http://www.ufoworldcup.org/Schedule.html - I saw "UFO World Cup in Japan 2007" - Perhaps that is a mistake? Or a different event and I misunderstood?
(3) Winchester: Why did you take out the Winchester citation? It provides a reference for the general format of competition. I re-inserted. Please explain if there is some reason the source should not be cited.
(4) Ashley Whippet page: I saw that you re-inserted the information on Ashley Whippet. Did you see that there is a page for Ashley Whippet now, which page includes that information? Including details of Ashley's career on the general Disc dog page seems redundant to me. Given that Ashley Whippet was the most famous disc dog ever, and given the quantity of information available on him, it seems to make sense to have a separate page on him. I thought the Dodger game story should stay on the Disc dog page because it's part of the history of the sport. To me it makes sense to leave the details of Ashley's career for the Ashley Whippet page. For now at least, I have removed that info from the Disc dog page.
(5) Super Bowl: Please note that Ashley performed at the Super Bowl XI pregame show (see the page for Super Bowl XI; a reference for that is also provided on the Ashley Whippet page). Since you know Alex Stein, perhaps you could ask him if Ashley also performed at the Super Bowl XII halftime show. The Super Bowl XII halftime show seems to be a commonly quoted piece of information on Ashley, but I could not find any independent source for it (it looks like people were just getting that from Wikipedia). The only verifiable performance I located was at the Super Bowl XI pregame show.
(6) White House: It would be really helpful to have a source for the fact of Ashley's performance at the White House. That info is included in the Ashley Whippet page, but a citation is needed.
(7) Language: Some of that other Ashley Whippet language does not fit into an encyclopedia article, although I understand your point (above) that Ashley is an important part of the sport. The fact of Ashley's significance should be included, but the viewpoint should be neutral. For example, the sentence
"Though many great dogs have come along since Ashley, he is still the standard by which all others are measure."
could be rephrased so that it does not sound as biased:
"Among judges in disc dog competitions, Ashely is widely regarded as the standard by which others are measured." OR "In the realm of disc dog competition, Ashley is universally regarded as the sport's greatest athlete and the standard by which others are measured."
Also, for the statement:
"Ashley's legacy lives on now, 30 years later, as the sport has become popular worldwide."
is sentimental, rather than objective and the reference to 30 years is inappropriate, since the article will not be rewritten and the year continuously updated. Likewise with:
"People and their dogs on at least four continents organize competitions and enjoy the simple joy of a disc in flight;and that terrific rush (for the dogs) of the catch at the end!"
The phrasing "simple joy of a disc in flight" is flowery and romantic; it is not the straightforward, neutral language of an encyclopedia. There is the same problem with "the terrific ruch (for the dogs) of the catch." Generally, it should be possible for you to convey the point that many people and dogs enjoy participation in the sport, without using biased language. However, to me it would make sense to include the information about the sport's worldwide popularity and the continents where dogs and handlers participate in competition. Nintendogs DS[edit]

Although I will leave it to more avid Wikipedia users, I find the Nintendogs DS section unnecessary. It does not give any information about Disc Dog as a sport and it only describes how to actually play the game. Image Quality[edit]

Long Distance+"The QUADRUPED"[edit]

This information was added by one user in 2012 and could have a few citations and a rewrite. The section on "The QUADRUPED" really should have what is now under "Long Distance", and the "Long Distance" section should have more info pertaining only to it. --Quivico (talk) 00:30, 18 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
