Various[edit]

There are a few new APIs for Windows 7 including Direct2D, DirectWrite, and a new animation API. Some of this information might be merged or linked into the Windows 7 article. I've recently installed the Windows 7 Beta SDK and have been experimenting with Direct2D in my Direct3D applications. Along with DirectWrite it simplifies text handling in my programs. Hexadecimal (talk) 21:34, 31 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Direct/Retained Mode[edit]

We say: " unlike Direct3D and WPF and similarly to GDI/GDI+, Direct2D is an "immediate mode" rendering API". However, I'm pretty sure Direct3D is an immediate mode API these days too (just like OpenGL is). We even say so on the Direct3D page. Multi io (talk) 12:17, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose Hm. I got a similar RFC for Directwrite; I see nothing different about this one. As I said then, I don't feel strongly about a certain amount of how-to listing and guidance; If a user accidentally picks up a bit of vital knowledge from WP when he is stuck, it seems just possible that the other pillars of WP might take up the strain. But it is unencyclopaedic to document the use of commercial software; it is volatile, the relevant material is on the web anyway, FREE yet, and maintaining it is a full time job for a team. Anything documented here is soon out of date and becomes more of a hindrance to the user and a humiliation to WP, than an asset to anyone at all -- Microsoft won't be a bit grateful, for one! I reckon that an article such as this one justifies no more than a lede and a reference or two to MS or possibly an independent forum, if that. Followup[edit]

I generally agree to not including every KB stuff out there that mentions Direct2D, but the platform update (which was added in the 1st diff) even has a section in the main article on Win7: Windows 7#Platform update. So unless you propose to delete that too, it should probably be mentioned here because it mostly concerned the visual parts. There are some detailed posts on the net about changes (to Direct2D) from independent developers e.g. [4]. JMP EAX (talk) 20:33, 9 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why outdated?[edit]

This seems to have been marked outdated with no explanatory comment -- is the marker aware of some info that would make this article obsolete? If not I think it should be removed. I've removed the tag. This wiki article is pretty basic, but I don't think that the additions to Direct2D like those from Windows 8.1 are significant enough to warrant a mention [at the overview/high-level coverage we're currently providing] so their lack of mention here doesn't seem to deserve a tag. Firefox[edit]
