The Finnish text on the bottom line says "Annettu Borgåsa...", so should this be instead an article about the diet of Borgå? The town was apparently not called Porvoo in any language back then (Porvoo is the contemporary Finnish name, Borgå the Swedish, both in daily use), so the contemporary Finnish name in this historical context is erroneus. Neither wouldn't we speak about eg. Vikings having a danelaw town of York, it was instead Jorvik back then. And besides, Borgå is not a forgotten name even today, it's one of the two official names of the town. Ultrix 11:47, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are right, with reference to the Gdansk/Danzig ruling, this should be known by the name Diet of Borgå as at the time Borgå was the official name of the town (interestingly, as you noted, even in Finnish). So, this should be changed. 82.21.219.114 (talk) 21:07, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the above, according to general usage on Wikipedia, this should be Diet of Borgå even though we should refer to the city as Porvoo in the text. I'm moving it. JdeJ (talk) 21:02, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Are you being serious? Sipoo got a Finnish-speaking majority in 2003, should someone say "I moved to Sibbo in 2002 and in 2003 I left Sipoo) Toponyms of Finland are very different from the Danzig/Gdansk. By the way also, Swedish still isn't an official language de jure in Sweden. Both Finnish and Swedish city names have been around for long. In many cases Finnish names first, like my home city Oulu derives from old Sámi name meaning flood water, the Swedish then build a castle and named the settlements Uleåborg. Do you have list of when every single place in Finland turned into Finnish/Swedish speaking majority? If not, then please let's use contemporary names. --Pudeo 12:17, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In Google Scholar, "Diet of Porvoo" wins "Diet of Borgå" 16 to 1, and in Google Books 27 to 0. Perhaps Wikipedia should not generate own historical terms, although it is self-explanatory to a Swedish-speaker.. Also, JdeJ, that was wrong way of moving pages, we should never copy & paste them. If moving is not possible AND if it can be even a bit controversial, request it: WP:RM --Pudeo 12:22, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is not a big issue to me and I do not take sides, but at least the Finnish name Porvoo originated during the 13th or 14th centuries: it is a direct tranformation from the original Swedish or possibly Danish name Borgå ("fort river"). Official documents preferred the Swedish name and the population of the town was mainly Swedish-speaking. But as you can see, the issue is rather complicated. Ultrix is certainly wrong to believe that Porvoo is a contemporary name only.--217.112.249.156 (talk) 20:40, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

the Finnish name[edit]

There reads: Porvoon maapäivät, or unhistorically Porvoon valtiopäivät
It has a source, that's good. But, when I look the source, it is only text and no external source to be found. I don't think that is the right way to do it. If I'm wrong, then leave it, but otherwise a real source should be added. 85.76.73.19 (talk) 04:29, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
