I have added extra details on the road provided in the refs already cited. I have also reverted an attempt to delete this info, which is available already in the refs.86.133.145.180 (talk) 16:26, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

Its name probably derives from later ignorance of its origin and history, having been replaced for travellers by other roads nearby such as Nine Mile Ride, which runs parallel to the Roman road about a mile away but at a lower height.

It would help to know when it acquired it's rather unusual name --- how can a road be diabolic ? --- Saxon ? Mediaeval, early or late ? Tudor ?

Of course, it also seems dumb for the Georgians to create Nine Mile Ride when there was already a ready-made road merely needing digging up.
