Coord[edit]

I note that a coord has been added to this article. I accept that a coord helps to remind readers that Dere Street is in the UK and not in the US, for example, but beyond that it is inappropriate. Surely there is a less misleading way to signify the large-scale location of a long roadway? --Storye book (talk) 07:33, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree that it's either misleading or inappropriate (I added similar coordinates to Cade's Road). The even larger scale location of France is given in a similar way - less precisely, but then anywhere within a degree of that coordinate is in France so it works. And for a Roman road coordinates are much more useful than e.g. a country or the M1 motorway, as the Roman road is not visible on most maps. It's especially useful when the coordinates are used in other ways, such as in Google Earth and Google maps, again because otherwise it would simply not appear by default. If there's a better way to indicate its location then that could be added, but the coordinates should be kept.--JohnBlackburnewordsdeeds 08:13, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

External links modified[edit]

Amended to 15 Roman miles (not 10). The following quote is from P527 of Margary 1973 (3rd Edition):

  • It is very probable that Derventio = Malton (on Derwent), and in that case the other identifications are likely, too, and the distances could best be reconciled by supposing that by a copyist’s error an X was displaced downwards in the last three lines which would originally have read XVII, XIII, XV.
