Ridiculous[edit]

This article (Demographics of Cyprus) contains the links to its sources but someone decided to tag it with this article contains information for the CIA Factbook. The CIA factbook TOOK this data from my contributions and copied them in its websites! The CIA Factbook is only a compilation of all the information on a country you can find in the internet. The CIA took your contributions to Wikipedia and published it in the CIA World Factbook? Whoa. That's circular. That brings the very credibility of the CIA World Factbook into question. We may have to remove all of it from Wikipedia. Assuming what you say is true, this is a serious problem, that needs a wider venue of discussion. (This is big. It could be the Signpost's next big story. Hell, it could be tomorrow's headline news!)
I suggest you report this problem at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Demographics, and post an announcement that links there at WP:CBB.

Graphical material showing the demographic change (Greek vs. Turkish Cypriots) is VERY needed[edit]

The intro passage is a bit confusing. It tries to include all waves of immigration from 1960s after independence! But in reality there should be several separate waves:

  • Turkish people from Turkey
  • Turkish people from Bulgaria
  • Bulgarians
  • Balkan peninsula
  • EU citizens (also, Turkish ethnicity people from EU countries) after Cyprus joined EU

If ALL official censuses would be presented in a graphical way, it would be extremely informative. The statistical data from these censuses would be THE start of discussion. But now it's a bit messy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.173.39.45 (talk) 09:06, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, i think this page is of utmost importance to Cyprus, as the Turkish part of Cyprus would love to join the EU, as well as Turkey does. And exactly the things stemming from the current demography and history of Cyprus are the reason why Greece and some other EU countries counter Turkish Cyprus claims to join EU, as well as Turkish efforts. The international solution of the "problems" associated with the history and demograhic change in Cyprus will not come easily. And this article could help to shed some light unto the facts and then the debate could continue.

This is response to Zlerman's message: Zlerman for the demographics section the paragraph that I and Chaosdruid prepared, adding your paragraph on the 1973 census will be excellent. We could substitute the existing paragraphs with the new ones us three prepared. Chaosdruid's paragraph and mine were all well referenced.

According to the first census carried out covering the entire island by the Republic of Cyprus in 1960 the country had a total population of 573,566. Greek Cypriots comprised 77% or 441,568 of the island's population, Turkish Cypriots 18% or 103,822, Armenians 3,627 or 0.6%, Maronites 2,706 or 0.4% and 4% or 24,408 being foreigners[1]. In the last census covering the whole island in 1973 Greek Cypriots numbered 498,511 or 78.9%, Turkish Cypriots 116,000 or 18.4% and foreigners were 17,260 or 2.7% [12].

In the last Census by the Republic in 2001 the population of the Republic of Cyprus (in the areas under its control) stood at 689,565. Greek Cypriots were 618,455 or 89.7%, Armenians were 1,341 or 0.2%, Maronites were 3,568 0.5%, Latins were 279 0.04%, Turkish Cypriots were 360 or 0.06%, 661 or 0.1% of unknown origin and finally foreigners numbered 64,811 or 9.4% of the total population [2]. The five biggest groups of foreign citizens in Cyprus in 2001 were 17,459 Greeks from the Hellenic Republic, 11,870 British citizens, 4,952 Russians, 4,939 from Sri Lanka and 3,245 from the Philippines[2]. The massive decline in the number of Turkish Cypriots is due to the division as a result of the 1974 invasion by Turkey. Greek Cypriots moved into the areas under the control of the Republic of Cyprus while Turkish Cypriots moved into the areas under the occupation and control of Turkish troops. The Republic of Cyprus estimated that in 2001 there were 87,700 Turkish Cypriots in North Cyprus[3]. The decline is due to an estimated 36,000 Turkish Cypriots who emigrated [9].

In the last estimation of its population the Republic of Cyprus reported a total population of 789,300 showing a jump of almost 100,000 since the last census [4] Greek Cypriots were estimated to be 665,223 or 84.3% of the population which also includes an estimated 2500-3000 Armenians [5], 6000 Maronites [6] and 2000 Latins [7] since they chose to be a member of the Greek community of Cyprus according to its constituion. Foreigners were a total of 124,077 or 15,72%; almost a doubling since 2001 due to the entry of Cyprus in the European Union. The five biggest groups of foreigners in the Republic of Cyprus are 37,604 Greeks, 26,661 UK citizens, 9,991 Russians, 4,146 Poles and 3,733 Bulgarians while 11,323 people are of unknown origin [8]. The estimate in 2007 for Turkish Cypriots is 90,000 [3]. In addition, the Republic of Cyprus Statistical Service also estimated that 150,000-160,000 Turkish immigrants (described as “illegal settlers” in the Republic of Cyprus Statistical Abstract 2007,[40] footnote on p. 72) were living in Northern Cyprus, bringing the de facto population of Northern Cyprus to about 250,000. This estimate produced by the Republic of Cyprus matches the results of the 2006 population census carried out by the government of Northern Cyprus

According to a census carried out in the beginning of 2006 by the Turkish Cypriot administration, the TRNC has a population of 265,100[10] of which majority is composed of indigenous Turkish Cypriots, with the rest including a large number of settlers from Turkey. Of the 178,000 Turkish Cypriot citizens, 82% are native Cypriots (145,000). Of the 45,000 people born to non-Cypriot parentage, nearly 40% (17,000) were born in Cyprus. The figure for non-citizens, including students, guest workers and temporary residents stood at 78,000 people.[10][11]

Please answer the specific question I put on your talk page:

On 13 June 2008 WhiteMagick started updating the numbers in Demographics of Cyprus#Demographic statistics. As of today, there are no references and no sources for the updated numbers that appear in this important section of the article. Could WhiteMagick please insert the relevant references and sources for each subsection? I do not need general paragraphs of text or references for general paragraphs of text, as you provide above on this talk page. I need specific references to sources that you used for the data in Demographics of Cyprus#Demographic statistics starting 13 June 2008. Ethnic groups[edit]

WhiteMagick added extremely important and interesting numbers on ethnic groups in Cyprus (13 June 2008, as subsequently updated). Unfortunately, these data are not sourced and I cannot find them in any of the sources recommended by WhiteMagick in previous communications. I therefore temporarily hid them with an edit note, pending provision of appropriate sources. When the sources are provided, we can easily reinstate them to replace the sketchy CIA statistics that I have inserted for the time being as the best sourced approximation. --Zlerman (talk) 06:59, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I've had a look at the major source, the 2007 Demographic report. It's a joke in this area - the figures are very clearly significantly understated. This almost certainly has to do with the methodology used, namely a Passenger Survey. CIA seems to be as good a source as any. Vizjim (talk) 21:43, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That (Muslim/Christian situation) will be specified as a footnote. See PRIO's article page 19. There, all the censusus in Cyprus island was mentioned. Read the footnote. The source article of PRIO lists all the sources of the figures. The source article of PRIO lists all the sources of the figures. No, not as far as I can see. "Census" and "population figures" must be specified. I agree. Also, since there are lots of census and population figures since 1670, it would be wiser to give only the data of years of "1. majority-minority changes and 2. peak ratio" as a separate table.Alexyflemming (talk) 12:12, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
