Satellite television radio[edit]

"Satellite television radio" is a term that I have coined. If anyone can suggest a better or more accurate term, I'd love to hear it.

Being a StarChoice subscriber, I can attest to the fact that the AM/FM radio stations simulcast as part of the DTR bundle are not all local: users can receive stations from all over Canada: see the channel lineup PDF on the Starchoice site.

Terminology confusion: "Digital TV/Radio"[edit]

I found this article while searching Google for something apparently different, which used to be called a TV radio. This is specifically what I am looking for:

A portable AM/FM radio receiver, which includes a digital decoder for playing only the audio portion of a free over-the-air, local TV broadcast station.

We used to have access to this very easily, since the old analog television broadcasts put audio into a separate but nearby frequency band, tunable by a portable FM radio.

Now this is much more difficult to achieve, since digital audio and video are combined into a single MPEG stream which must be decoded to recover the audio portion.

I do not know if the current MPEG decoder technology is sufficiently well developed to be able to run for hours off of batteries like the previous TV radios.

Also some handling is needed for separating subchannels (*.1 *.2 *.3, etc), where a station broadcasts multiple programs by subdiving their overall channel bandwidth.
