Dispute[edit]

Cumberland was never a city. It was a township but mascaraded that by calling itself a municipality. --File:Ottawa flag.png Spinboy 03:40, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Then put municipality on it then. -- Earl Andrew - talk 05:23, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
It should say township. --File:Ottawa flag.png Spinboy 05:33, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
No, it was legally a city. It ceased being an official township in 1999. -- Earl Andrew - talk 07:03, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have proof of that? Last I was aware, it was a township right up until amalgimation. --File:Ottawa flag.png Spinboy 07:22, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Their historical society is the Cumberland Township Historical Society. --File:Ottawa flag.png Spinboy 07:24, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Do you have proof that it was a township at amalgamation? My proof is here. [1] If you feel that is incorrect, I would like proof stating so. -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:10, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In the City of Ottawa bylaws, specifically Pool Enclosure By-law No. 2001 - 259, they define "Old Municipality" as "the old municipalities of the City of Cumberland, the City of Gloucester, the Township of Goulbourn, the City of Kanata, the City of Nepean, the Township of Osgoode, the City of Ottawa, the Township of Rideau, the Village of Rockcliffe Park, the City of Vanier and the Township of West Carleton". See [2]. Also, there are numerous references to "City of Cumberland" in the City of Ottawa Act 1999. For example, see [3] which dissolves the old municipalities. --Big_Iron 10:05, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
In that case, this should probably be moved back to Cumberland, Ontario (city) like it was at before. -- Earl Andrew - talk 19:53, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

From your own link, Earl:

Unless otherwise stated, these are Municipal Townships.
1850 - Fitzroy, Gloucester, Goulbourn, March, Marlborough, Nepean, North Gower, Osgoode, and Torbolton townships incorporated.
1851 - Cumberland (Township) incorporated.
1852 - Torbolton (Township) incorporated - again.
1969 - Cumberland (Township) is withdrawn from Russell County to become part of Ottawa-Carleton (Regional Municipality).
1974 - Goulbourn (Township), and the villages of Richmond and Stittsville amalgamate as Goulbourn (Township). The townships of Fitzroy, Huntley, and Torbolton amalgamate as West Carleton (Township). The townships of North Gower and Marlborough, along with pieces from the townships of Gloucester, Nepean, and Osgoode, amalgamate as Rideau (Township).
2001 - The townships of Goulbourn, Osgoode, Rideau, and West Carleton are dissolved with the creation of the new Ottawa (City).

I'm guessing that Earl is referring to the next section on Cities:
1999 - Cumberland (Township) becomes a city.
If you don't accept the opinion of the City of Ottawa or the laws of the Province of Ontario (see links above), then what would be adequate proof? --Big_Iron 09:12, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Spinboy, notice how under 2001 it does not mention Cumberland being dissolved into Ottawa. This is because it was a city. -- Earl Andrew - talk 19:51, 12 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I added a reference to the part of the City of Ottawa Act, 1999 which describes the "Dissolution of old municipalities":
1. The Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton.
2. The City of Cumberland.
3. The City of Gloucester.
4. The Township of Goulbourn.
5. The City of Kanata.
6. The City of Nepean.
7. The Township of Osgoode.
8. The City of Ottawa.
9. The Township of Rideau.
10. The Village of Rockcliffe Park.
11. The City of Vanier.
12. The Township of West Carleton. 1999, c. 14, Sched. E, s. 5 (1).

About time to remove the disputed tag?[edit]

It's pretty obvious now that Cumberland was a city prior to being amalgamated into Ottawa. Must we continue to have the disputed tag at the top of the article?

2006 census[edit]

Cumberland's population isn't independently reported by the Canadian Census anymore...2006 census figure is calculated by summing all of Cumberland's component census tracts. Marathone 09:25, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed page move[edit]

As per WP:CANSTYLE#Neighbourhoods, this article should be moved to Cumberland, Ontario, especially since it is no longer a city, and the "(city)" disambiguation is not in keeping with any naming convention. In accordance with the guideline, however, the move is first being raised on the talk page. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 13:05, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Upon realizing that there was another, almost identical, stub article on Cumberland's years as a township, I was bold and merged the two articles at Cumberland, Ontario. There is no need for two stubs dealing with the same subject. Skeezix1000 (talk) 11:44, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
