Arawak (Taino) natives

There is some mention of Arawak (Taino) words that have leaked into the English language, but this doesn't apply to Jamaica. There is very little evidence of any Arawak (Taino) culture in Jamaica since the Arawaks were totally wiped out by the early settlers. The word "barbeque" isn't used in Jamaica, for example; instead, Jamaicans use the word "jerk" as in "jerk chicken" or "jerk pork". Also Jamaicans don't use "hammocks" nor the word "hammock". Any links to "Taino" culture are extremely flimsy, at best. Hoserjoe (talk) 18:03, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Religion

Some contributors refer to the Rastafarian "religion". All dictionaries define religion as "a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices", or similar. Religions write down their curriculum and document everything in detail. Relgions can be propagated and repeated indefinitely. They are a managed and organized teaching system. The Rastafarian "religion" doesn't meet this test. In the truest dictionary sense, Rastafarianism is not a "religion". It is a folk cult (i.e. A "faddish devotion to or veneration for a person, principle, or thing"), and varies from person to person, and village to village. Suggestions for Improvement

This article needs massive improvement. Jamaica is one of the world's most influential cultural centres (if you go by population size).

Jamaican Christianity. This section needs a much stronger assessment of one of the nation's most important cultural activities: church going. Statistics, names of influential preachers, etc.

Jamaican Cuisine. How can we neglect Jerk, Ackee and Salt fish, etc.

The Sport section needs improvement - there's hardly anything (plus we can't be using casual phrases like 'just recently' - put a date in if its an important event (it was).

Nothing about Art? No mention of the galleries, paintings etc.

Tourism and Beach life.

Plus, how can we have a page about culture that's got no images?! We've got to do better. Much better! Ackees (talk) 21:00, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Rastafari

This section likely pre-dates the creation of Religion in Jamaica and Rastafari movement, either of which would seem to be a better location for much of the detail it contains, leaving in the main paragraph of Culture of Jamaica#Rastafari a link to Rastafari movement and a short summary (with the emphasis on the significant impact of the movement on Jamaican culture). As things stand, the section appears to unbalance the article. -Arb. (talk) 10:19, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Repeated Vandalism

I just reverted months old vandalism from this page. It needs closer watching. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.26.83.144 (talk) 10:25, 10 October 2011 (UTC)

Bahá'í Faith

updated - merged - integrated and trimmed a lot. Smkolins (talk) 11:12, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Synagogues

The sentence " There are also a small number of Jewish synagogues in Jamaica, dating from 7th century." is just plain wrong. What was probably meant was 17th century, but without a source, that should be taken out. Jaaner (talk) 09:47, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
