Photography is the more commonly referred-to area for the concept, which is best introduced with ref to photo cropping, hence new example at the top and video reformatting examples in a gallery at the end. Still needs some serious work on the cinematography section, with heavy ref to the article at Aspect ratio. I'm not sure cropping is particularly relevant to cinematography, as it's (more correctly) described as matting done either in camera or in projection. It might more appropriate to broadcasting, but although I know less about it, I'm really not sure it's any different in effect. mikaultalk 00:12, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cropping images on Wikipedia[edit]

I was wondering whether there is a wikitext method to crop images, to avoid uploading a new version. It doesn't appear so: Wikipedia_talk:Images/Archive 2#Showing_only_part_of_an_image. kostmo (talk) 02:56, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And see here at Commons. I've been wondering about the same thing. It would be a very convenient feature for maps when all you need is a specific region and here I'm thinking specifically of georeferenced (locator) maps. For some images, we don't have permission to create derivative versions (such as cropped images), but if we had the technology, that sort of thing should be easier to track down than uploads of modified versions. How about leaving a note at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) or Bugilla? Cavila (talk) 12:14, 1 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The correct terminology involved in cropping[edit]

Care needs to be taken to explain that "cropping" refers to the removal of undesirable material from the exterior areas of a photograph (or movie), and not the removal of items or areas from the interior of a photo. The latter involves "cutting a hole" in the photo and then replacing that with some uniform color - or some other innocuous stuff.
I have thought of a couple of good words to use in describing cropping. Cropping in done on the periphery of a picture to remove useless nonsense/trash/noise. There are objects of noise in some peripheral areas of the picture that need to be removed and disposed of.
I have seen verbal errors about this elsewhere: "to crop" means to trim off something from the periphery, and then dispose of that. That is also "cutting off" or "cutting away". A different matter altogether is to cut a hole in a picture to remove something undesirable, and then to fill in the hole with innocuous stuff, and so the terminology is different.47.215.180.7 (talk) 11:24, 3 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
