Ambiguity in second sentence[edit]

Whether the "It" that was destroyed in WW2 is the gate or the surrounding region of the same name is not clear. --130.209.241.193 (talk) 16:02, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Meaning of Cripplegate[edit]

There isn't the slightest doubt that Crepelgate (Crepel meaning a covered passage or tunnel) is the original name as its use predates Cripplegate by centuries. It was originally a postern gate cut through the wall so this makes perfect sense. St Giles (patron saint of cripples) was only so named after the name had been corrupted and its original meaning forgotten.TheMathemagician (talk) 14:43, 30 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The argument was made by E. C. Jones (Saint Gilles, essai d'histoire littéraire, 1914) that this false etymology led to a change in the life of Saint Gilles as told in medieval literature. Prior to the association of Gilles with Cripplegate, his injury from the arrow wasn't specified. But in some vernacular texts, the arrow hits Gille's leg, or thigh, or knee, etc. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.47.71.226 (talk) 05:07, 31 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
