Citation problems[edit]

The Oakland Tribune article "Crime in Oakland: Perception, reality or both?" is cited to support the sentence "Oakland recorded the highest robbery and motor vehicle theft rates in California, with one robbery per 114 citizens and one car theft per 40 citizens, three to four times the state average." That article doesn't have those statistics. It appears to be an entirely spurious citation. Oliver Crow (talk) 19:57, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Another Citation problem[edit]

Citation 19 seems to be pointing to a white supremacist web site. Not a place I wanted to go...

Thanks. Fixed. Brycehughes (talk) 07:53, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Police staffing[edit]

@Falco528: Regarding this and this, if you believe that the 1,100 staffing figure is unreliable, then why not just remove it? The information you added to refute the 1,100 quote qualifies as original research, and although it may very well be valid, it does not belong in Wikipedia. Also, it is not necessary to attack the credibility of ORPN in an article that is not about ORPN. Would simply deleting the 1,100 figure be agreeable?

In addition, the information about the Michigan study on police staffing and crime levels does not belong in this article, as it does not directly relate to crime in Oakland, California. It may very well belong in the Police article or the Crime article, so feel free to add it there.

Let's follow WP:BRD and get this sorted out – please do not make your changes again until we come to a consensus here. Thank you. Brycehughes (talk) 15:39, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Michigan study combined with this Oakland topic is a violation of WP:SYNTH because it takes fact A, adds it to fact B, and comes up with a novel conclusion not present in either source. Binksternet (talk) 16:20, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Brycehughes: I understand that you want the article to remain as it was before I researched ORPN and its allegations (1,100 figure, "half a police department," etc. The fact is that ORPN is an acronym taken by one man who is a former (failed) political candidate in the city. By removing my original research which places ORPN's ideas in context, you are again obscuring the source of these quotes and removing much more balanced and objective data. Understand that this issue matters, that the highest level criminologists at top universities do not agree as to the statistical relationship between police staffing and crime rates, and, most importantly, that these non-cited estimates belong to a former political candidate who does not cite any reputable sources. I will revert the article to my August 31 balanced version unless you can provide alternative evidence that supports ORPN's conclusions. Thank You.

Falco

I don't understand. Are you saying the ORPN figures are accurate or inaccurate? Brycehughes (talk) 19:02, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Brycehughes: It seems that you did not read my researched edit from August 31st before reverting it. ORPN is a man named Charled Pine. His goal, like that of many political candidates, was to frighten residents, with fabricated statistics, into electing him. He failed. You can see a video of him here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWdi5ewwaLc

I will copypaste my edit for your convenience here:

"Since 2004 the number of police officers in Oakland has been cut by approximately 13% to 15.6 per 10,000 residents. According to the Neighborhood Watch group Oakland Residents for Peaceful Neighborhoods (ORPN), administered by political candidate Charles Pine,[38] Oakland needs 1,100 officers to patrol the city.[39] ORPN arrived at this figure by means of arguing that unreported crime rates have increased, despite a gradual statistical decrease in crime (according to the Oakland Police Department itself). In an effort to support their statement, they cite an Adobe .pdf document issued by the Oakland Police Department that displays no data regarding unreported crimes.[40] Citing their figure of 1,100 in reference to the fact that as of the beginning of 2013, Oakland employed only 616 officers, ORPN has dubbed Oakland the "City With Half a Police Department."

On the contrary, as of 2010, the city of New Orleans, whose murder rate outpaces that of Oakland,[41] had 48 officers for every 10,000 people, over 300% more than Oakland."

In the long run, we will be much better off removing all of this bogus ORPN stuff and replacing it with the statistics we actually have. We do know that the overall violent crime rate, as well as drug crimes rate, has been decreasing in Oakland. I can find those stats.

Falco528

Okay, you're saying they're inaccurate. I agree – just remove them. Wikipedia isn't a place for inaccurate figures. However, nor is it a place to keep inaccurate figures just so that you can show how inaccurate those figures are.
By the way, if you type four tildes "~~~~" at the end of your post, Wikipedia will sign your name automatically. Brycehughes (talk) 19:14, 19 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

lack of police[edit]

When talking about the lack of police you should talk about the robbery rates (which is a violent crime not a property crime, not sure why it's referred to one in this article at one point, but maybe they were referring to theft), not homicide rates. Oaklands robbery rate is crazy high, highest in the USA by quite a bit.

Language n words[edit]

If i read the chapter Internal issues with the Oakland Police Department, i hear a lot of cynicism. What Larry Reid said, "residents will have to open their wallets first," is a very strange and not functional way to guard the safety for inhabitants. If there is such a climate of distrust, fear, agression and crime as in Oakland, this hight, the only way to solve is by the community itself or the state, the rasonable people outside. The most important fact of all is nowhere written in this article: its about drugs, its about crack, ita about the children of the children of the first crack parents. If you have this situation, its like a hell in a hell. You cant fight against the inner-hell before you did not solved the outside-hell. But how you get to the outside-hell? You have to stop the drog-traffic. Watch a movie about this people there. Than you have this long sentence: Partly due to an ongoing negative rapport between police officers and community members, evidence of which can be traced back to times preceding The Black Panther Party, and which reemerged in the wake of the Oakland Riders scandal in 2003, the shooting of Oscar Grant in 2009, and the controversial handling of Occupy Oakland protesters in 2011 (including two separate instances of critical injury inflicted on peacefully protesting Iraq War veterans) This statement says very strange things. It mixes the now with the past results in the context of the abbility of the police to help. This means that the police is blockeded because of old storries? As its written here - yeas. The police has prejudices. The state departament has prejudices. As we see it from fare away here in europe, thats nothing that is good. Nor here nor there. What the article also does not say is the fact about the hole drug situation in the USA. If you watch just 10 or 20 of these documenaries, its easy to understand. But this article here tells us just 40% of that what is realy going on. The background is just missing, is "censored"? Thats possible. F.e.g. the acute hidden Mexican Drug War is just the peak of the iceberg. --82.192.229.198 (talk) 15:14, 16 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Homicide rate question[edit]

In the FBI link referenced(for the infobox on the right), there were 70 homicide in Oakland(2018), but in the "Oakland homicide" table below, a different source was used and said there were 75 homicides. Which one is correct, or does I have a misunderstanding? 2601:647:4400:FE90:CE4:DE23:7322:254D (talk) 23:58, 24 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
