Is it a township?[edit]

Ragged Island, on which the plantation of Criehaven briefly existed, is said by this article to be a township. Is it? The Maine Land Use Regulation Commission lists Ragged Island as one of the "unorganized islands" within its jurisdiction having no town structure. The purpose of dissolving the plantation of Criehaven in 1925 was to obtain a 'wild land' category, that would obviate the need for town meetings and further taxation. Are taxes paid to a town called Criehaven? Are there town meetings? ElijahBosley (talk ☞) 12:40, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In response to a private e-mail query a helpful local living on Matinicus informed me: "Criehaven is at present an Unorganized Territory. That means the state handles taxation etc. directly, there is no local government at all, and yes, LURC does handle the zoning. The property on the island is all privately held; it is not any sort of state park or anything like that. Most people call it Criehaven, pronounced Cree Haven; Ragged Island is just for the maps. There was an old name also of "Racketash," variant of "Ragged Arse," kind of a bad joke, and not sure which version came first! In any event, it is not legally connected with Matinicus in any way." --(name omitted to safeguard privacy). As a result I am amending the text of the Criehaven article to eliminate references to it as a township. Normally I would consider changing the article's heading to "Ragged Island," with a redirect from Criehaven, but since apparently the locals refer to it as Criehaven rather than as Ragged Island perhaps it is best left this way.ElijahBosley (talk ☞) 11:02, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are ten lobster-fishing and ten non-fishing families - From an island resident for 40 years, personal observation.

I agree with the above poster - Criehaven is not legally connected to Matinicus in any way, and Criehaven is an Unorganized Territory as described.
