Scope of this article[edit]

Shouldn't Crack (software) point to a more general view of cracks in software (i.e., "cracks" to make copied software work?) - I think the common usage of "crack" when talking about software is more along these lines, rather than referring to one specific 'nix program. 71.204.49.76 18:43, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I renamed the article to give it a more specific parenthetical disambiguator. – Pnm (talk) 20:43, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion[edit]

I contested the proposed deletion of this article and replaced the reference. There are three sentences in section 3 of the source.

Alec Muffett’s crack program [Muff92] gave everyone the best available tool at the time. Like many UNIX password cracking programs, Alec’s program takes encrypted passwords from a password file and tries to guess them in a systematical manner. It is amaz- ing what it found when I first ran it on our own pass- word files.

There's also a mention in the Red Hat Linux 9 bible which isn't available in Google Books but appears to be 1+ pages. I imagine there are other references in UNIX security literature, and seems likely to meet the general notability guideline. – Pnm (talk) 20:40, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll wave my hand and note that I'm the author of Crack, but I've addressed the "notability" question by additional citing books including Cheswick & Bellovin's "Firewalls and Internet Security" which was groundbreaking in the field; I will pick up a couple of other notable references and post them to help with future concerns. OK I think I have citations for absolutely everything I added now; if someone think I have been unobjective please let me know, I've tried to be very restrained. Apologies for making heavier use of the save button than the preview one, this is a learning experience. Alecmuffett (talk) 09:20, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
