Rating[edit]

I designated this as low importance stub because while it is a popular tourist attraction along route 66, it does not indicate any cultural, social or gastronomical significance.

Corn dogs certainly indicate gastronomical significance! Have you ever eaten one Jeremy? Ivo, I prefer Stay Puft Marshmallows. Yeah, I love the idea of deep fried, corn bread coated hot dogs. You can top it off with a deep-fried Mars Bar. Great for the coronary arteries.

Dubious[edit]

I made a comment at the DYK page but the claim that Waldmire invented the corn dog on a stick is a dubious at best. It is based pretty much solely on his own personal claim. See [1], an Aug. 16, 2006 Chicago Tribune article touched on the fact that this claim was debated. Although the article is no longer available on the Trib website it is available from ProQuest Historical newspapers database which is available at most libraries. I used to have access but since leaving the university would have to actually go to the library to get it, I assure you, however, that I am not making this up. :)IvoShandor (talk) 07:56, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I will try to get to it tonight, I am only "at work". I was thinking of using the cite from Springfield, Illinois, since I added it there and read the article during the GA push for that article. Perhaps a similar wording to what is there: The corn dog on a stick was invented in the city under the name “Cozy Dog,” although there is some debate to the actual origin of the popular snack. I think it was rated stub because each project has their own idea of what stub and start etc equals. Some suggestions for bringing it up to start (although it is close and I might rate it as such for the IL project of which I am a member) would be to develop some sections, such as "History", "Cuisine" etc and possibly adding a photo, which I am going to do right now. --IvoShandor (talk) 08:47, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(EC)The photo came from the National Scenic Byways Program and has been on Commons forever, I originally found it when gutting the Springfield article last year. I think it would be a great photo to include with the hook. Of course no guarantee it'll be used with it but it may be. I also added two categories. I dunno re de-stubbing: while there are references, they're all broad and the text reads like it was smashed together with little regard for grammar or logical flow; the subjects of the sentences jump around, and people appear with little introduction. We jump from the original price of a corn dog to Buzz and Sue, then pop from 2001 to 1996? While Searching for History of the Corndog[edit]

Found a lot of sources that say Springfield, Illinois.

The thing is, and correct me if I am wrong, but it seems likely that the claim is still based on the assertion of the "inventor". However, if sources say it, there isn't much we can do other than note the discrepancy reported by the Chicago Tribune, which I would say is reliable enough to not discount.--IvoShandor (talk) 12:41, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Added, finally, I had to go to the library to access the Trib article, just to make sure (I hadn't read it since last February).
