Merge discussion[edit]

It may be unreferenced but County of Nairn provides a valuable historical record. This record is not however complete - several of the trad. counties that still exist in modern form (e.g. Angus, Shetland) don't have their own page. I am not aware of any that are merged into a ward, although there is no reason in principle why they should not be that I can think of. In short I am in favour of the merge as having two articles on essentially the same subject, one modern and one historic seems unnecessary, provided of course the historic information is retained. This does however come with two caveats. First of all, ideally someone would take responsibility for fixing the redirects of which there area bout 50 in County of Nairn versus 7 to the new article. Secondly, the title of this article seems to me to be both clumsy and inaccurate - perhaps Nairn (local government)? There may be a way to solve both issues by merging this article into 'County of' and then renaming it but this may just create more clutter. Yes. Merger process should preserve content of County of Nairn, transferring it to this article.
Thhat the article was previously at Nairn (council area) and then Nairn (local government) seems to have been lost from the article history. Looks to me like someone has been abusing admin power. I moved it because there is no Nairn council area in the sense of one of the 32 council areas of Scotland and then moved it again because local government seemed too narrow, but perhaps with the secondmove I was ahead of myself, anticipating merger of content from County of Nairn. The county was not really a local government area until circa 1890. Also, it seems there is still a registration county which, again, is not a local government area.

Proposed move[edit]

This article needs fixing, but it is also at a rather odd title. I propose moving it (back) to "County of Nairn" - currently a redirect here. Other articles in Category:Counties of Scotland are either "County of ...', 'Fooshire', (or in the case of counties that have articles for both the modern and earlier, 'Fooshire (historic)'). (Ben MacDui 27 July 13 who forgot to sign).

The name 'Nairnshire' is much more common. That is what is actually used by the council, and appears on signs etc. So I think it should be moved to that. 'County of Nairn' is hardly ever used. --Vclaw (talk) 23:01, 29 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah - well in my experience part of the problem is that the most common use is actually just 'Nairn' as in 'The Birds of Moray and Nairn', the 'Nairn Show' (admittedly run by the Nairnshire Farmers) etc. We have had so may moves and redirects that yet another one can't do any harm - but do you have any comparable statistics? Proposed move to 'Nairnshire'[edit]

Speaking as a Scotsman, this is by far the more common name and moving it would bring it in line with the other Wikipedia entries on counties. Yorkshire is not listed as the 'county of York' for example. Zacwill16 (talk) 20:11, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This issue has a bit of convoluted history on Wikipedia, which may reflect the real world confusion. I just looked at this source, which says:

"County of Nairn: Nairnshire was a county in the north east of Scotland. The county also included the burgh of Nairn. Nairn County Council was established by the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1889, taking over powers from the Commissioners of Supply, County Road Trust, and other local authorities. In 1930 Nairn County Council combined with Moray County Council in respect of almost all the functions of county government, although Nairn County Council continued until 1975 with greatly reduced functions. Nairn County Council and Nairn & Moray County Council were abolished in 1975 by the Local Government (Scotland) Act, 1973, and the former county became part of Highland Region."

This uses 'County of Nairn' & 'Nairnshire' interchangeably and I have at least one map that calls the area, simply 'Nairn', - hence 'Nairn County Council'. I am not certain about this but I suepct 'Nairnshire' may not have been an official name - although it was certainly used regularly. 'County of Nairn' is arguably more accurate, but it may also be a kind of disambiguation. It's a puzzle. I'll see what else I can find. Ben Mac Dui 10:57, 20 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
