Hope this adds to 396,205! Must find calculator....Lozleader (talk) 16:02, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The area I want! My mapping software gives me a figure in hectares, but I am not convinced it is right. Should be about 17,000 acres I think? Can't find a nice source. MRSC (talk) 16:22, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm these add up to 395,836 excluding the "shipping", 396,227 including them. Which doesn't agree with what we have in the infobox. I presume that figure was from VoB. Since they have changed their site around (all beige and dark brown, very 70s) I can't find the 1971 pop figure any more....
If we add the figures for area it comes to 17,727 acres but that is WP:SYNTH, and doesn't allow for rounding. Not sure where to access the printed 1971 census returns like these [1] Table 3 would be the one, by the look of it. I seem to remember the 1971 census only being available on 1974 boundaries when i went looking for it...
I seem to remember LSBU library has the census on the old boundaries (I wanted the new ones when I went looking would you believe!). I used http://casweb.mimas.ac.uk/ to get these figures. It gives 396,233 as the population (same as List of administrative counties and county boroughs of England by population in 1971). I always get a slightly different result from VOB and I think that is because it includes something like "visitors overnight" that other sources don't. Incidentally there is a big discrepancy in population eg between Berwick Hills and Marton, but each got 3 councillors. Presumably done on number of voters rather than pop? Lozleader (talk) 16:35, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
