Welcome to Countries playing Australian rules football.

Everyone is welcome to expand on the page, but please read this beforehand, to understand which values go in which cells.

Country Shows both the flag of the country listed (as an icon) and the country's name. They are listed in Alphabetical order (according to continent). The name of the country is linked to the wiki page on football in that country.
National Team Lists the name that is given to the listed country's Australian Rules football side. Not all country's have a name for their national side. In the case of more than one, list the most commonly referred to name. This name is linked to the wiki page on that national side (and in its absence, to an external website for the side.
Governing body Lists the name of the governing body of football in that country. Not all coutries will have a governing body. The name of the body is lined to the wiki page on the body (which should in turn include a link to an external website). In the absence of a wiki page on the body, it should link directly to an external site on the body.
Major leagues Lists prominent SENIOR leagues that exists in the country. If the major league is the same name as the governing body (such as the AFL is) then leave this box blank. Each league should link to their respective wikipage (which will list teams). In the absence of a wikipage on the league, and external link should link the league name to their official website.
Best IC performance Lists the country's best performance at an International cup and the year it achieved this result. The year should be linked to the wikipage on that year's International Cup.
Clubs Lists clubs in the absence of a governing body. Countries covered by leagues (where there is no Governing body) are not listed under clubs. For example: the United States Clubs columns lists no clubs as they are all covered by the USAFL whereas had the USAFL not existed, and only leagues like the SEAFL, MAAFL, GGAFL, EAFL and NWPAFL, then clubs like the Rocky Mountain Saints and the Fort Lauderdale Squids would have been mentioned under clubs. Clubs listed should be linked to an external website, if they have one.

Countries on the list ??[edit]

Are there any references to say that football is actually played in some of the countries listed ? ie Zimbabwe, Chile, El Salvador, Mexico, etc ? --Rulesfan 01:02, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are, but they are weak. I'm in the process of updating. In a nutshell, I'm unsure about Zimbabwe, but it was played in Senegal in the past. Chile had a website up and running briefly on dot.tk and El Salvador is mentioned on the Argentinian site. I don't know about Mexico though. Kiribati, if I'm not mistaken, was part of the old IAFC so they must have had something going on, and I'm pretty sure a clinic was even held in Nepal (by an American dude).40010 11:39, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Should the article be renamed "Countries that have played Australian rules football". I don't know that it follows that just because a clinic has been held in a country that it plays it. Perhaps in this case there should be a year last played in there or something. Otherwise some of these entries are bordering on non-notable. --Rulesfan 23:39, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree entirely, however being in the still-very-much-developing stages, it is hard to gauge exactly what presence footy has in some countries. Look at Argentina for example, their website has been down for ages and yet forums and even the Dixon article on WFN insist that there is still activity in the region. Places like Vietnam went quiet for some time and then all of a sudden are back, stronger than before, and with links to the Viet community in Melbourne. Whilst I want to clean things up, I'm unwilling to discount a country that may very well still have a football presence. If you know that a country no longer harbours footy players, feel free to remove them from the table.

I quite like the way the corresponding Football (soccer) around the world article is composed. I am going to work towards using that format.--Rulesfan 23:55, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Countries that never really happened[edit]

A few of these never really got off the ground - there was talk, or an Aussie visited there and posted notices looking for players, maybe had a kick in the park... But I don't know if that should qualify? Also, for somewhere like Kenya, a US player held a clinic there, but I don't know if that should get them onto the list.

Kiribati on the old IAFC site consisted of an email contact who was interested, I don't know if any footy was ever played.

El Salvador - ditto.

Zimbabwe - a friend of one of the World Footy News writers was there a few years ago, but I haven't heard from him in a long time and I don't think it ever really got going. He had plans to start a juniors program and get a senior team to the IC.

There was an older version (or a different page) that was funnier, basically a list of countries saying AFL isn't played here.
