Untitled[edit]

Aren't West Coast jazz and Cool jazz similar enough to have West Coast jazz be a redirect to Cool jazz? The only cool jazz I know of that's not West COast would be Birth of the Cool by Miles Davis. There are probably many more but are they significant? Spalding 21:34, July 20, 2005 (UTC)

No, they're not similar enough; one is called West coast - that's pretty specific. Furthermore I'd say anyone that lumps Davis, Konitz and Brubeck/Desmond into the same category of style is either smoking something or has obtuse ears. At the very least, I must say I'd never heard of Chamber jazz, Calypso jazz, Mini-jazz or Nu jazz before coming to Wikipedia, but I knew about West coast jazz and could easily distinguish it from Cool. If nobody else does, I'll eventually do the West coast jazz article myself and clear it all up. ¦ Reisio 01:05, 2005 July 21 (UTC)

So, where to now?[edit]

I copyedited the hell out of the article, and I think much of what was wrong with it is fixed; but there's still a lot more to be written, and that'll take editors who know more about the cool jazz specifics then I do. I agree. Kind of Blue is definitely not Cool jazz. Maybe Miles should be woven into the article earlier. For the moment all I changed is the recording date of Birth of the Cool. ---Sluzzelin 19:47, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, virtually everything in this article is wrong, starting with the misdating of Birth of the Cool (try 1949-1950) & miscrediting (it was issued under Davis's name but it was a joint project among Davis, Gil Evans, John Lewis, & Gerry Mulligan). The reference to Coleman Hawkins & Lester Young as equal influences is wrong too--they are contrasting stylists & it's the Prez influence that's important for cool-school saxophonists. -- I will try to make a few edits to get the ball rolling. --ND 03:04, 13 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

West Coast vs. NYC?[edit]

I've removed the reference to NYC as the origin of the "cool" connotation. It's a tad counterintuitive, in that many (most?) associate the West Coast with cool jazz (hence the term "west coast cool," a term which uncovers over 60,000 Google hits; also, an earlier editor was of the same opinion). In any case, in order to avoid a West Coast vs. NY debate, I've simply removed the NYC reference without playing up the West Coast reference. Ex0pos (talk) 09:36, 23 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The article previously bore the {{Unreferenced}} tag. Following the addition of one citation, another editor used an automated tool to change this to {{Refimprove}}. I can see a couple of sentences that (at least) need clarification, starting with the lede. Postwar Jazz?[edit]

The first paragraph suggests that postwar, Jazz was only either cool jazz or bebop. So swing etc was killed off by bebop? Just asking. Seems this should be made explicit.

What Exactly defines Cool Jazz?[edit]

I am a composer of All sorts of music, but I have no experience in Jazz and I like how the Wikipedia pages on Cool Jazz and Chamber Jazz describe it, but they Give no help as to what it could be. What I mean by that is, Slower Tempo? How Slow (What Range of Tempos are normally used)? More Relaxed? In What Way? More Constant Key Signatures (Which Ones)? HELP!!!
