Two questions[edit]

Is Sturdza-Vodă the same as Dimitrie Sturdza? - Jmabel | Talk 07:09, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What does Aprodul purice? I read it as something like "The bailiff of the fleas". I suspect I'm wrong. - Jmabel | Talk 07:09, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Two answers[edit]

1. No, it is Mihail Sturdza.

2. Aprod had different meanings in medieval Romania, but the most likely here is that of "son of a lord, serving at the court; squire". This "aprod"'s name was Purice (i.e., Flea), and the legend, narrated in Negruzzi's epic poem, has him taking part in the Battle of Vaslui and offering Stefan cel Mare his own horse after the Domnitor's horse had been killed. As Stefan was quite short, Purice crouched to help him mount the horse. Before riding back into battle, Stefan promised to make of Purice a Movila (a play on words, Purice meaning "flea", and Movila approx. "mound"), since Purice had made himself a "mound" for his master. According to the legend, Purice's descendents were the Movilesti family. The legend is mentioned in this latter wiki article (where "Movila" is translated as "hill", which is "deal" or "colina" in Romanian; I'd rather use "mound", since "movila" can be just a pile of things or even a small protuberance, and only rarely a "hill").
