List of Recipients[edit]

Up to this point we have been listing the names of each recipient. With figures in the mid twenties this is manageable, although starting to look a little unwieldy. As the number of recipients of this decoration is only likely to increase, perhaps it is time to consider what we should do in the future.

See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Orders, Decorations, and Medals#'Notable Recipients' for a connected discussion, on the future of 'Notable Recipients' sections. In this discussion I have proposed a solution to that particular problem, one which could equally well be applied here—the creation of categories for each recipient, in this case Category:Recipients of the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross.

Any views?

Note 2[edit]

Note 2 states that the award to the Royal Irish Regiment "is the first time this medal has been collectively awarded to a military unit, and only the third occasion that such a collective award has been bestowed (the others being the 1942 George Cross to Malta and the 1999 George Cross to the Royal Ulster Constabulary)". The statement that this is the third occasion that such a collective award has been bestowed ignores awards of British military decorations to French and Belgium cities in World War 1. I do not have a complete list (I would appreciate one if someone does) but Ypres and Verdun were awarded the Military Cross and Dunkirk, which was a major naval base for the British in World War 1, was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. For the Military Cross award to the City of Verdun see http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9E07E0DB1F31E733A05757C1A96F9C946796D6CF Anthony Staunton (talk) 22:22, 14 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have amended Note 2 by adding "since the start of World War 2" to the original note 2 which was unaware of World War 1 British gallantry awards to French and Belgium cities. I also posed a question on 5 April 2008 to the Humanities Reference Desk seeking a complete list of British Gallantry awards to French and Belgium cities. False entries in award list[edit]

I'm pretty sure

  • Jones, Reece Paul Sergeant The Rifles 12 Sep 2008 Darfur
  • Clarkson, Philip Anthony Lance Corporal The Rifles 12 Sep 2008 Darfur

are false entries. The British Army has not had a deployment to Darfur as far as I or any of the newspapers I've read are aware, I can't find a London Gazette entry and the only relevant internet search results lead to this wiki. Can someone double check that these are false and remove them if they are? Also it might be worth double checking the entire list.

Thank you for spotting that - I've taken them off for now as I can't find any external sources to back this up. Looking at the page history, they both seem to have been put in by Vypz; I've put a note on their talk page, but I'll try to fully verify the others whenever I can. recipients and citations[edit]

I started the process of finding references and creating citations for the recipients. Ones that I cannot find a WP:RS will end up here. That way if a reliable source later becomes available the entry can easily be added back to the article. Cheers. EricSerge (talk) 12:36, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

please refresh![edit]

Looking through this i have realized there are some names missing from the table, such as "gatsby" who served in the royal welsh guards and was presented with the cross on the 9th of may 2009. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.158.223.188 (talk) 21:04, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Recipients[edit]

I have provided further London Gazette references for recipients and have added:

  • Wright-Hider, Corp Simon, Royal Marines, 23 March 2012, Afghanistan

who appears in the: London Gazette, 23 March 2012 and Operational Honours and Awards List: 23 March 2012

I can not find any authority, either in the Gazette or the operational honours lists on GOV.UK for:

  • Grace, L/Cpl Laurence , Princess of Wales's Royal Regt, 2 March 2009, Afghanistan;
  • Edwards, Lieut Alexander Elliott, Royal Welsh, 4 October 2013, Afghanistan.

I have left the two on the list - can anyone provide a reference?

As no reference or other authority, I have removed L/Cpl Laurence Grace and Lieut Alexander Elliott Edwards from the list of recipients.
Please reinstate if a reference found.
