Is the CSP the oldest state police force. I believe the massachusetts state police was founded in 1865. Either way the two articles contradict each other and one should be changed. --Sreyan 14:42, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User above, you're right. An article about Massachusetts State Police on Wikipedia.org states that that agency is the oldest one, stating that it was founded in 1865. However, MSP appears to have been born in 1921, according to a reliable source I checked (source: "State Trooper: America's Troopers and Highway Patrolmen" - Turner Publishing Company 2001). Therefore, the distinction of being the oldest state police force would seem to go to Connecticut State Police. Furthermore, I checked both MSP and CSP websites. While I didn't find anything on the MSP website about its history, CSP website claims its agency is the oldest. MSP according to my source was founded in 1921, well after Connecticut State Police (1903), Pennsylvania State Police (1905), New York State Police (1917) and West Virginia State Police (1919), during the automobile age. This article and the reference it is citing say that MSP was founded in 1865. That appears to be incorrect, however as during that time, it was MSP predecessor, an organization that had some sort of statewide law enforcement, that was acting as a state police agency. The MSP as it is known today was created in 1921. But if some people are convinced that MSP is indeed the oldest state police department in the nation, then this Connecticut State Police entry should be edited accordingly because both articles are contradicting themselves - Ramses.

In advance, apologies if this comment is not added to the discussion properly;

I believe the discrepancy in the long standing claims made by the MSP vs. CSP lie in that, according to my understanding of the history, the first police officers to be appointed with statewide authority were appointed in Mass circa 1865 but by even the Wiki article, was "small and informal" until 1921, when they were organized as a official department of the state.

So while MSP's statewide policing mission does date back to 1865, CSP would be the oldest organized and titled as-such agency.

Well, several years after this discussion started, CSP own website now (re)states that "The Connecticut State Police is one of the oldest state police agencies in the United States" -- and not the oldest as it previously said. It now appears that it is generally accepted Massachusetts State Police is the oldest state law enforcement agency in the country. Most articles on the web put MSP birthdate in 1865 instead of 1921, a date seen as when the agency expanded its manpower rather than its creation. MSP website reads, "The Massachusetts State Police was created in 1865, making it the oldest statewide law enforcement agency in the nation."
